AB - ABSTRACT: The El Tascon copper-deposit, Anserma, Caldas, Colombia, comprises a vein containing bornite, pyrrhotite, chalcocite, malachite, cuprite, and covellite, associated with a granitic intrusion. The genetic classification is hard to determine, but possibly hypothermal. Laboratory analysis shows 27.62 percent copper for a selected sample. Further exploration is recommended.

AB - ABSTRACT: The La Palma antimony deposit, Riosucio, Caldas, Colombia. The rock of the locality is intensely weathered and covered by soil to a minimum thickness of one meter. Rare outcrops indicate an acid igneous rock of porphyritic texture, probably a porphyritic dacite. Two workings were visited; in one the deposit comprised two continuous needles of stibnite; in the other, blocks of stibnite in clayey soil. The deposits are considered epithermal.

AB - ABSTRACT: The La Plombagina deposit of copper and molybdenum, Anserma, Caldas department, Colombia, is emplaced in a granite locally altered by the hydrothermal solutions involved. The granite is veined and fissured, and shows a faint schistosity. The part of the deposit exposed shows small lenticular veinlets of variable direction and inclination. Chalcocite, molybdenite, bornite, quartz, and malachite are found. A mesothermal origin seems most likely. Selected samples give tenors of 31.46 percent copper and 6.52 percent MoS (sub 2) . Further exploration is recommended.

AB - ABSTRACT: Preliminary reconnaissance of the El Quindio cinnabar deposit, Cajamarca, Tolima department, Colombia. The deposit in one of the oldest in the mining history of Colombia, having been worked by the Spaniards since early times. The region is composed of Paleozoic chloritic schists. Volcanic rocks nearby are considered neo-Cenozoic, and are probably related to the cinnabar-bearing veins of the deposit. The mineralization is complex. The deposit has no economic value at present because of the difficulty of working it. The mercury content of several samples is tabulated.

AB - ABSTRACT: Report on the exploitation of rock in Bogota municipality, Colombia. Discusses technical, economic, and social aspects of the extraction of rock, sand, and clay near the city of Bogota. The exploitation has been almost without technical direction, and has resulted in various kinds of damage to the area, such as landslides, drainage dislocation, water pollution, weakening of structures in the city from dynamite explosions and soil slipping cutting of ugly and dangerous scars in the earth, and disappearance of vegetation. It is recommended that rock and sand exploitation be stopped immediately and that of clays be gradually eliminated.

Copper mineralization is confined to the igneous rocks. The ore minerals include chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite, and native copper. Twenty-nine individual deposits are described, and tenors in copper, silver, and gold are given. With very few exceptions these are too low to be of economic significance.

AB - ABSTRACT: The landslides of Jerico, Boyaca department, Colombia. The stratigraphic section from Belen to Jerico shows sedimentary rocks of Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary ages, and igneous rocks. A cut near Jerico exposes upper Cretaceous sands hidden elsewhere by landslide debris. Landslides have destroyed the upper part of an irrigation canal which also dams the waters of the Veraguas river. It is recommended that these waters be freed because no solution to the landslide problem can be effected, and a method for releasing them is presented.

The region contains rocks of Jurassic to Quaternary age, steeply dipping and with a somewhat complicated structure, including thrust faulting. The limestone strata of commercial value comprise a lower and an upper bed, 15 and 20 meters thick, in the lower part of the Cretaceous Villeta formation (Barremian and Aptian). The silica content of these beds is less than 7 percent.

AB - ABSTRACT: Landslides of Umbita, Boyaca department, Colombia. The terrain is overlain by thick, poorly consolidated sandstone beds intercalated with calcareous shales. Their age is not certain, but probably upper Cretaceous Guadalupe. Two types of slippage occur--slump and earthflow, and mudflow. The slides are due not only to the loose character of the sandstones, through which water penetrates easily to the slippery shale layers, but also to the general inclination of the beds in the direction of sliding. A drainage program is recommended to alleviate the condition.

AB - ABSTRACT: Preliminary reconnaissance of some phosphate deposits in the Soata municipality, Boyaca, Colombia. The formations of the region include Jura-Trias and Cretaceous rocks, and Pleistocene and later sediments. At Santa Elena was found a deposit 30 meters thick of phosphatic limestones containing 16.26 percent P (sub 2) O (sub 5) and calcareous lydites of 2.39 percent, with apparently sufficient reserves for exploitation. Other deposits investigated were too low in phosphate to be of value.
