AB - ABSTRACT: Discusses rock weathering and soil formation in the tropics, especially Colombia, and concludes that "weathering in the tropics takes a similar course as in the temperate zone. The products of weathering are hydrargillite, goethite and quartz. In a dry climate calcite may sometimes be found in the clay fraction. In the absence of humus weathering starts with lateritisation. However as soon as humus comes into play hydrargillite ceases to be stable and alters, in part at least, into kaolinite. Superficial lateritisation, therefore, only persists while not impeded by vegetation. Consequently laterite is not a soil but a rock.".

AB - ABSTRACT: In connection with the projected construction of retaining structures on the left bank of the Magdalena river in the harbor of Zambrano, Colombia, the geologic and physiographic features, and the extent and causes of landslides in the area are discussed. The area is composed of Recent alluvial deposits overlying upper Tertiary sandy clays. The landslides are considered due to flowing and sliding of water-saturated plastic clays.

AB - ABSTRACT: Tierra Bomba island and the coastal area of the Cartagena bay, north Colombia, in which the island is located, are composed of Miocene formations and two series of Pleistocene deposits. Although the geologic setting of Tierra Bomba is favorable to the occurrence of ground-water aquifers at depth, the waters would probably be too highly mineralized, because of the presence of soluble sulfates in the sedimentary strata and the infiltration of sea water, to be of use as a source of water supply.
