AB - ABSTRACT: The economic and insured losses from earthquakes have increased dramatically over the last few decades and present the insurance industry with ever greater challenges. With the earthquakes of Armenia/Colombia, Huajuapan/Mexico, Izmit and Duzce/Turkey, Athens/Greece and Chi-Chi/Taiwan, 1999 was the worst affected year in terms of earthquake catastrophes since 1976, notwithstanding the individual events at Northridge/California in 1994 and Kobe/Japan 1995. In particular, the earthquakes in the second half of the year perfectly illustrated certain aspects of the earthquake risk today, such as predictability, the consequences of the massive growth of cities and the susceptibility to losses of high technology. The findings obtained from these earthquakes should be used to ensure that we are better prepared for such events in the future. In addition to the findings that can be gained from today's earthquake catastrophes, fundamental research at universities provides an essential contribution to better assessment of global loss potentials. Detailed investigations of potentially active fault zones in seismically weak areas is particularly important, as there is virtually no loss experience for such regions. The importance of such investigations is illustrated by an analysis of the exposure in the Greater Cologne area. Just like in Australia and eastern North America, the earthquake risk in Germany is a problem involving a low occurrence probability with potentially devastating effects.

AB - ABSTRACT: Routine geodetic measurements are made at only a few dozen of the world's 600 or so active volcanoes, even though these measurements have proven to be one of the surest precursors to eruptions. Shallow magma accumulation in the crust often results in slight movement of the ground surface, easily measured using standard land-surveying techniques. The pattern and rate of surface movement reveals the depth and rate of pressure increase within a shallow magma reservoir. This process is clearly demonstrated at Kilauea and Mauna Loa, Hawaii; Long Valley caldera, California; Campi Flegrei caldera, Italy; Rabaul caldera, Papua New Guinea; and Aira caldera and nearby Sakurajima, Japan. Slower and lesser amounts of ground movement at Yellowstone caldera, Wyoming, and Tangkuban Parahu, Java, are attributed to changes in a hydrothermal system that overlies a crustal magma body. The vertical and horizontal dimensions of eruptive fissures, as well as the amount of widening, were determined from the difference between pre- and post-eruption geodetic surveys at Etna, Italy; Tolbachik, Kamchatka; Krafla, Iceland; and Asal-Ghoubbet, Djibouti, the last a segment of the East Africa Rift Zone. Continuously recording instruments, such as tiltmeters, extensometers, and dilatometers, have recorded lengthening and upward growth of eruptive fissures, usually at rates of hundreds of meters per hour, at Kilauea; Izu-Oshima, Japan; Teishi Knoll seamount, Japan; and Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island. Such instruments also have recorded the hour or less of slight ground movement that preceded small explosive eruptions at Sakurajima and presumed sudden gas emissions at Galeras, Colombia. The use of satellite geodesy, in particular the Global Positioning System, offers the possibility to reveal surface strain changes local to a volcano and over a broad region that includes the volcano.

AB - ABSTRACT: The late Pleistocene-Holocene ecological and limnological history of Lake Fuquene (2580 m a.s.l.), in the Colombian Andes, is reconstructed on the basis of diatom, pollen and sediment analyses of the upper 7 m of the core Fuquene-7. Time control is provided by 11 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) (super 14) C dates ranging from 19 670 + or - 240 to 6040 + or - 60 yr BP. In this paper we present the evolution of the lake and its surroundings. Glacial times were cold and dry, lake-levels were low and the area was surrounded by paramo and subparamo vegetation. Late-glacial conditions were warm and humid. The El Abra Stadial, a Younger Dryas equivalent, is reflected by a gap in the sedimentary record, a consequence of the cessation of deposition owing to a drop in lake-level. The early Holocene was warm and humid; at this time the lake reached its maximum extension and was surrounded by Andean forest. The onset of the drier climate prevailing today took place in the middle Holocene, a process that is reflected earlier in the diatom and sediment records than in the pollen records. In the late Holocene human activity reduced the forest and transformed the landscape. Climate patterns from the late glacial and throughout the Holocene, as represented in our record, are similar to other records from Colombia and northern South America (the Caribbean, Venezuela and Panama) and suggest that the changes in lake-level were the result of precipitation variations driven by latitudinal shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
