AB - ABSTRACT: In vegetated areas, the main factors that control the reflectance detected in a remote sensor are the topography and the vegetation itself. Underlying lithology influences the topography and, to some extent, the natural vegetation. In order to detect the potential relationship between lithology and reflectance, a Landsat 7 ETM+ image was multispectrally processed using GIS-produced ancillary data as spatial constraint. A series of classifications were performed using different combinations of input data sets, spatial domains, and classification schemes in the eastern border of Middle Magdalena Valley, a sedimentary basin in Colombia. The accuracy of each classification was assessed using a lithological map as reference data in the error matrices. Accuracy values were used to quantitatively compare the classifications and to identify the classification elements that have more control on the results. The classifications were designed by combination of three classification elements: classification scheme, input data set, and spatial domain. Classification scheme is the type of classification, input data set is the data to be classified, and spatial domain is the area where the classification is performed. The simplest combination (an unsupervised classification of a 6 non-thermal bands performed in the whole work area) is considered the standard because requires no previous knowledge of the area and less preprocessing in terms of area and type of bands. Any change in any classification element produced better values than the standard classification. On average, the highest overall accuracy was produced by a supervised classification (30 classes) of 6 non-thermal bands plus homogeneity filtered band 4, in the low vegetated portion of the work area. These 30 classes were agglomerated into 5 lithological classes by a new scheme developed in this thesis. This agglomeration scheme is automatic and purely based on quantitative constraints. The input data set with best performance was the one that employed information of the pixel variability in the band 4, the band that detects more leaf-transmitted energy. This thesis is dedicated to Alba Lucy, who encouraged and inspired me to complete this study.

AB - ABSTRACT: Linnaean systematics lacked a unifying theory that adequately explained its success at an observational level, but this did not prevent it from being highly successful, and its theoretical base was later supplied by evolution. The idea of a global stratigraphy has had a similar history. Zones and stages are correlated regionally and to some extent globally. The North American Land Mammal "Ages" are another example on a continental scale. Observationally, these approaches have been surprisingly successful, suggesting a powerful underlying theoretical base (causal stratigraphy of Krassilov). It is also known that marine stages tend to be around six million years in duration. This pattern corresponds to van der Hammen's pollen stratigraphy of Colombia, Martin's expression of the North American Land Mammal "Ages," and Stout's climatic/sedimentary cycles of the North American midcontinent. The leaf emargination cycles of Wolfe also seem to be equivalent to marine stages or the biostratigraphic triplets of Martin and van der Hammen. We believe that this is the result of global climatic cycles, probably reflecting variations in solar activity, that form the basis of a global stratigraphy. Such a stratigraphy may represent equal or nearly equal units of time, as do other astronomical systems. Because present stratigraphic systems tend to be more local and carry their own historical baggage, we propose a new nomenclature based on the repetition of these units, in a sense, a calendar for earth history. We propose that the smaller stratigraphic unit of about two million years be called a vadh for T. van der Hammen, who first characterized it and recognized its importance. The relationship of the larger unit to a marine stage was well expressed by T. M. Stout and may be named a stout.

AB - ABSTRACT: This research focused on the comparison of low cost methodologies to determine ionic nitrogen and phosphorous fluxes across the soft sediment-water interface in Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta. In situ transparent incubation chambers and sediment cores for laboratory incubation were employed. It was found that inside the incubation chambers a depletion of dissolved oxygen occurred thus the incubation can not be extended for more than six hours, time insufficiently to detect important variations in concentration of the analyzed ions. Furthermore in addition, chambers were difficult to handle. Twenty-four hour sediment core incubation in the laboratory did not have the above-mentioned problems. Oxygen concentration could be kept constant, and ion concentration changes were generally large enough to allow quantitative estimations of the fluxes.

AB - ABSTRACT: Bathymetric and morphometric characteristics of La Fe reservoir are described. Theoretical predictions are derived from morphometric parameters and shape elements. The shore development index (F = 2,25) shows a more or less dendritic system. In accordance with the values of the volume development index (Dv = 1,05), La Fe reservoir has a conical basin, and slightly convex shape with several inflection points (SCx-micro). The values of relative depth (Dr = 2,07%) and effective fetch (L (sub f) = 5,9X10 (super -3) km) show a waterbody with a reduced road for the wind action and a considerable depth in the sampling point. It is predicted that La Fe reservoir is a freshwater system with thermal stability, considerable light penetration and allotrophy, low productivity, restricted mixing to first meters of water column and a littoral zone widely developed.

AB - ABSTRACT: The thematic cartography of the reef biotopes of the Islas del Rosario archipelago and Isla Baru was complemented. The archipelago is an Holocene reef complex with terraces, fringing reefs and bank reefs, formed from the interaction between mud diapirism, relative sea level changes and reef growth. Marine ecological units correspond with the vertical reef zonation described for the continental Caribbean. There is a great extension of dead Acropora spp. among which several other kinds of organisms (mainly algae) develop. As a result, there has been a replacement of dominant species and changes in zonation patterns. Health of survivor species is moderate, being chronically affected by regional and local stress conditions.

AB - ABSTRACT: The term Tetuan Limestone is formally proposed in order to designate the inner part of the Villeta Group placed in the Neiva Sub-basin. The lithostratigraphic gap is defined from outcropping sequences in El Ocal, Itaibe and El Tobo streams where tree segments (I, II and III) are established. These segments are simultaneously correlated with four segments (A, B, C, and D) defined in subsoil through wireline logs. The regional aspects of the unit are documented with a map and four correlation sections. The sedimentary environment is proposed as an open carbonate platform (ramp); flooded by warm water and development during time of a transgressive cycle from the Middle Albian to the Upper one, over a pericratonic basin.
