AB - ABSTRACT: The striking feature of Holocene climate change along the Pole-Equator-Pole: Americas (PEP1) transect is that both hemispheres were generally warmer and drier in the early and middle Holocene than they are today, but with some exceptions. In North America, the northwestern and southeastern parts of the continent were warmer and drier because of increased insolation and strengthening of both the Bermuda High and the Eastern Pacific Subtropical High. However, the heat low in the midcontinent strengthened the monsoon in the southwestern United States, which was wetter in the early to middle Holocene than it is today, although still warmer. In the southwestern United States and the basin of Mexico, seasonality of precipitation was enhanced in the early Holocene with different results in the mountains and lowlands. Wetter conditions also existed in a band from Texas to the eastern Midwest. Northeast Canada, which was still covered by the Laurentide ice sheet, was the exception to an early Holocene thermal maximum. In South America, the early Holocene was also warmer and drier in most areas both north and south of the equator. In the lowlands, savanna regions were drier over a larger area than they are today, and the Andes were drier from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego, except at high elevations in northern Argentina and Chile. During the early and middle Holocene, westerly storm tracks were more tightly focused than they are today between 45 degrees and 50 degrees S. Holocene climate change in the Amazon tropical rain forest was relatively minor. A reduced north-south migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during the early to middle Holocene is a possible explanation for the synchrony of maximum aridity in the two hemispheres. The mean position of the ITCZ must also have remained more northerly year-round in the early to middle Holocene, reducing easterly moisture throughout South America. Throughout the Americas, the late Holocene was generally wetter and cooler.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Slide Mountain Terrane consists of Devonian to Permian siliceous and detrital sediments in which are interbedded basalts and dolerites. Locally, ultramafic cumulates intrude these sediments. The Slide Mountain Terrane is considered to represent a back-arc basin related to the Quesnellia Paleozoic arc-terrane. However, the Slide Mountain mafic volcanic rocks exposed in central British Colombia do not exhibit features of back-arc basin basalts (BABB) but those of mid-oceanic ridge (MORB) and oceanic island (OIB) basalts. The N-MORB-type volcanic rocks are characterized by light rare-earth element (LREE)-depleted patterns, La/Nb ratios ranging between 1 and 2. Moreover, their Nd and Pb isotopic compositions suggest that they derived from a depleted mantle source. The within-plate basalts differ from those of MORB affinity by LREE-enriched patterns; higher TiO (sub 2) , Nb, Ta, and Th abundances; lower epsilon (sub Nd) values; and correlatively higher isotopic Pb ratios. The Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of the ultramafic cumulates are similar to those of MORB-type volcanic rocks. The correlations between delta (sub Nd) and incompatible elements suggest that part of the Slide Mountain volcanic rocks derive from the mixing of two mantle sources: a depleted N-MORB type and an enriched OIB type. This indicates that some volcanic rocks of the Slide Mountain basin likely developed from a ridge-centered or near-ridge hotspot. The activity of this hotspot is probably related to the worldwide important mantle plume activity that occurred at the end of Permian times, notably in Siberia.

AB - ABSTRACT: Several SAR images were simulated from a digital elevation model over a 10X15 km test-site of Colombia, with different depression angles. Those simulations were compared in terms of geomorphological information. The shadow and saturation phenomena are very important for that kind of interpretation: their relationship with depression angle was analysed from a theoretical and practical point of view. Some "multi-depression" colour-composites with several configurations were interpreted too.

AB - ABSTRACT: Nevado del Ruiz volcano is an andesite stratovolcano located in the northern Andes of Colombia. The volcano erupted on 11 September 1985, 13 November 1985, and 1 September 1989. The last two eruptions emitted juvenile solid material. This paper examines the volatile and light lithophile trace element contents of melt inclusions and matrix glasses from this juvenile material, and proposes a model for degassing within the volcano. Major element distributions in the glasses show two evolutionary trends, with subsidiary points that lie between the two trends. The data suggest the existence of two separate magmas, which have interacted, mingled, and mixed during their ascent and eruption. Water contents in melt inclusions, as determined by secondary ionization mass spectrometric analysis, are generally low, averaging between 1.6 and 3.3 wt.%. Halogen concentrations in the glasses range from 400 to 1200 ppm for fluorine and from 1100 to 1500 ppm for chlorine. Sulphur contents are low, not exceeding 500 ppm, with most glasses containing <200 ppm. Lithium concentrations range from 20 to 40 ppm, beryllium from 1.5 to 2 ppm, and boron exhibits high variability from 30 to 100 ppm. The only significant difference between melt inclusions and matrix glasses is for water, with matrix glasses having significantly lower concentrations (<0.5 wt.%) than the melt inclusions. The generally elevated concentrations of boron in the magma may be a consequence of enrichment in the source region of the magma, i.e. by subduction of altered oceanic crust and/or sediments. Yet the large degree of boron heterogeneity in both melt inclusions and matrix glasses necessitates subsequent addition of boron at shallower depths as well, by the assimilation of crustal sedimentary rocks or by interaction with hydrothermal fluids. Evidence for pre-eruptive magma emplacement at shallow levels is provided by (1) anhydrous mineral assemblages of plagioclase and pyroxene, (2) high silica contents of glasses, and (3) low water contents in melt inclusions. When combined, these observations suggest a period of magma residence at shallow depths, probably <3 km beneath the summit of the volcano. A multistage model of magma transport and degassing involves alternating periods of magma ascent and magma ponding. Initially, volatile-bearing magma ascends from depths of 9-15 km, driven by buoyancy. During decompression, the magma loses gas, particularly CO (sub 2) and sulphur. The magma eventually ponds at its neutral buoyancy level. At this point, the gas-saturated magma cools and crystallizes, thereby liberating gas under isobaric conditions. As a result, CO (sub 2) is depleted from the magma whereas H (sub 2) O and SiO (sub 2) are enriched. The H (sub 2) O enrichment is caused by its increased solubility in the magma as CO (sub 2) is degassed, whereas SiO (sub 2) is enriched by fractional crystallization. The density of the magma decreases as the level of dissolved H (sub 2) O increases, eventually causing the magma to become buoyant once more and to continue its ascent, either to erupt or to freeze at shallow depths.
