AB - ABSTRACT: A microflora discovered in the uppermost layers of the marine Cretaceous deposits on the western margin of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, just below the first recognized continental levels, has given a Lower Maastrichtian age. This dating and sedimentologic arguments allow the proposal a withdrewal of the sea in a northeasterly direction with local uplifts corresponding to a Late Cretaceous tectonic event on the western rim of the South American continent. This tectonic event is correlated to the Late Cretaceous collision of a volcanic arc with the continent known farther north up to Central America.

AB - ABSTRACT: Three main geodynamic steps characterize the evolution of the Western Cordillera of Ecuador from 120-130 Ma B.P. 1. The ophiolitic Pinon Formation originated in the opening of a marginal basin during Cretaceous time. Ophiolitic rocks of the Western Cordillera of Colombia were obducted onto the South American Continent during an Alpine type nappe deformation which occurred by the end of Cretaceous time. 2. The calcalkaline island arc of the Macuchi Formation which developed during Paleocene to Oligocene time, uncomformably overlies the Pinon Formation. The age of the Macuchi Formation is well constrained by the microfossils recovered in the Unacota Limestone and the Apagua Formation which consists of turbidite sediment and conglomerate. A strong tectonic phase of folding occurred during Oligocene time. 3. From the Oligocene to the present time a continental volcanic arc developed. It is clearly related to the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Continent.
