AB - ABSTRACT: The taphoflora of Nova Iorque beds (06 degrees 45'56"S/44 degrees 03'00"W, MA-Brazil), in the Parnaiba Basin, is the only record of a Neogene taphoflora in the western part of Northeastern Brazil. The presence of Lauraceae, Malvaceae, Ebenaceae, Fabales, Meliaceae and Smilacaceae suggests that it represents an open forest environment at no more than 800 m altitude. Taphonomic analysis has shown that the leaves of the Nova Iorque beds were quickly deposited in lacustrine environment close to where they had grown prior to significant biological attack. Multivariate analysis of the morphological and biometric characters of fourteen taphofloras from the Neotropical province, permits inference of a tropical climate for the Nova Iorque, Colombia, and Ouricanguinhas taphofloras, the last two under more humid conditions. The Nova Iorque vegetation had a partially closed non-deciduous canopy consisting of the canopy itself and understorey shrubs. From this conclusion one can infer that, during the Pliocene, the Atlantic Forest extended as far as the State of Maranhao. At the present time, this area is dominated by caatinga, but there also occur remnants of tropical forest considered as the northward extension of the Atlantic Forest.
