AB - ABSTRACT: In this study, the thermogravimetry was used in order to measure the susceptibility of coal to the spontaneous heating and the existant relations between some properties of fuel and the phenomenon are illustrated. The experimental part was realised with sample of seam from mines of Carboniferous Zone of La Sinifana in the Department of Antioquia. It was determined that the coal tendency to self-inflammation is influenced by moisture, fixed carbon, elemental carbon and oxygen content; whereas, there was not relation between the ash and volatile matter content and the spontaneous combustion.

AB - ABSTRACT: This article deals with aspects related to the risk of dust explosions in coal mines, namely: The necessary characteristics that render the coal dust a potential source of explosions, The most common causes of ignition, The effects of dust outbursts, The parameters through which the degree of explosivity of a particular coal sample are recognized, The experimental indexes that, as a first approximation, indicate the possibility of explosion at a particular area of the mine. The study and analysis of these factors, considered as indicators, points out to a high susceptibility of the coals under consideration to the explosion phenomenon and to the need to implement means to forestall the risk of initiation of an explosion, to control its propagation and to suffocate the explosion that has happened. Techniques of prevention and control of dust explosions are presented.

AB - ABSTRACT: The studies of chemical elements causing colour, density, inclusions and refraction index were made on beryl group minerals from Brazil, Colombia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Russia, India, Australia. After studies it was established that: - The highest quantities of chromium are in Zimbabwian and lowest in Colombian emeralds; the highest values of iron are in Russian heliodors and golden beryls, and the lowest in Russian aquamarines. - There are high quantities of chromium in Zambian aquamarines. For this reason they were named as chromium aquamarines. Inclusions found in them are common for the Kofubu emerald mine in Zambia. - At 405-430 degrees C yellow beryls become bluish (aquamarine). - Refraction index and density increased, decreased or rarely didn't change in yellow beryls after heating. - It is possible to point out the country and even the mine of emeralds and some aquamarines according to their density, refraction index and inclusions. - In studied beryls refraction index and density varied in wider interval than it is referred by other authors. - There are two types of water molecules after treating beryl crystals with polarized infrared rays. It was confirmed using some techniques that it is possible to indentify Fe (super 2+) and Fe (super 3+) in the certain location within the cell of beryl. The data presented in the article show that jewellery made of beryl group minerals or other gems are not only glittering decorations but also complicated products of nature, with their beauty secrets almost impossible to be revealed by just admiring them.

AB - ABSTRACT: Landsat images, together with maps and aerial photographs, have been used to produce glacier inventories, define glacier locations, and study glacier dynamics in the countries of South America, along with the Andes Mountains. In Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the small glaciers have been undergoing extensive glacier recession since the late 1800's. Glacier-related hazards (outburst floods, mud flows, and debris avalanches) occur in Colombia, in Ecuador, and associated with the more extensive (2,600 km (super 2) ) glaciers of Peru. The largest area of glacier ice is found in Argentina and Chile, including the northern Patagonian ice field (about 4,200 km (super 2) ) and the southern Patagonian ice field (about 13,000 km (super 2) ), the largest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica.
