AB - ABSTRACT: Heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ag, As, Hg, Sb, and Bi) released from the mining and processing of gold-bearing sulphide minerals from the Marmato District in western Colombia, were studied to determine their geochemical behaviour and distribution in regional streams. Waters from Marmato carry appreciable dissolved metals (Zn, Cd, Cu, and As). The concentrations of these metals and of cyanide (0.13-3.8 mg l (super -1) ) make these waters unsuitable for drinking, agriculture, or industrial use. The concentrations of these metals in sediments and particulate matter are: 129-619 mu g g (super -1) for Cu; 330 mu g g (super -1) -2.28% for Pb; 1365 mu g g (super -1) -1.8% for Zn; 7.6-200 mu g g (super -1) for Ag; 218-1850 mu g g (super -1) for As; 6.8-56 mu g g (super -1) for Sb; 28-240 mu g g (super -1) for Cd; 95-370 ng g (super -1) for Hg; and 4-306 mu g g (super -1) for Bi. The highest values were found for the Marmato River, while the larger Cauca River shows the lowest values, and the concentration of the metals in its sediments reflects the contents of its tributaries. Chemical speciation shows that Cd, Zn, Pb and Bi have the highest bioavailability potential (exchangeable fraction) while Sb and Hg do not have mobile fractions.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Sinu-San Jacinto region is geologically and geographically positioned to become Colombia's next active frontier region for oil and gas exploration. The region is a Cenozoic accretionary complex along the juncture of the South America and Caribbean plates fed principally by sediments derived from the evolving Central and Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. Thus, the deformed sediments within the accretionary prism contain widespread sandstone, as well as oil- and gas-prone source rocks. In addition to possessing demonstrably favorable and widespread petroleum systems, the region is crossed by pipelines, contains a major refinery at Cartagena and three petroleum shipping facilities, and has several major cities that could serve as a local market for gas. There is excellent potential for offshore production. Since the first discovery in the region early in the century, the level of exploration effort has been small and intermittent. With the very limited data available, the undiscovered, recoverable oil and gas reserves for the region are estimated to exceed 1.0 billion barrels oil equivalent.

AB - ABSTRACT: The recovered succession at Site 1000 consists dominantly of peri-platform sediments and sedimentary rocks, interbedded with intervals of redeposited pelagic and neritic carbonate sediments from the slopes and tops of the adjacent shallow water banks. Site 999 is situated offshore from the Nicaraguan Rise, in the pelagic environment of the Colombia Basin, and the recovered succession there is 1066,4 m thick and consists primarily of pelagic rocks.

AB - ABSTRACT: Two contrasting components of Cenozoic deformation interact in the northernmost Andes of northwestern South America: 1) A dextral strike-slip component related to the relative east to northeast motion of the Caribbean plate relative to the South American continent, and 2) an east-west component due to right-angle convergence between the South American and Nazca plates. The Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, spanning both domains, must therefore record the transition from the indistinct southern Caribbean plate boundary to northern Andean tectonic styles. Despite its present and paleogeographic setting, all kinematic reconstructions of the Cordillera Oriental have ignored the possibility of transpressional tectonics. Studies explaining the evolution of the Cordillera in light of the interaction between contrasting Caribbean to Andean structural styles are entirely missing from the literature of the Cordillera Oriental.

AB - ABSTRACT: Our data indicate that, during the Early Paleogene, the MMVB was a broken or composite foreland basin sourced by the Central Cordillera, intrabasinal highs, and the Eastern Cordillera whose uplift began in the Early Paleogene and not in the Miocene as previously assumed. Thus, a paleogeographic barrier separated the MMVB from the Llanos Foothills Basin to the east. Growth-stratal geometries suggest that a second phase of deformation of the Eastern Cordillera began during the Late Paleogene. Overfilling of the MMVB may have produced communication with the Llanos Basin between these pulses of Paleogene deformation. The principal uplift of the Eastern Cordillera resulted from Miocene-Pliocene out-of-sequence thrusting. Pre-Cenozoic crustal structure produced a heterogeneous pattern of crustal thickness and mechanical properties; consequently, spatially varying flexural response to Cenozoic tectonic loading may have determined the MMVB geometry.
