AB - ABSTRACT: A study of infiltration regime using simulated rainfall over in situ samples documents variations in infiltration pattern with time, slope gradient and intrinsic properties of the soil. Previous soil erosion studies use laboratory rainfall simulator on disturbed samples removed from their natural conditions. This study uses a portable rainfall simulator to make measurements of infiltration on in situ samples. The investigation consisted of four stages: construction of rainfall simulator, development of method for measuring infiltration, field tests and analysis of results. Tests were performed on soils at a constant slope angles (0 (super o) and 15 (super o) ), at different slope angles and soils exposed to a simulated five day raining period. Resistivity measurements taken in conjunction with the rainfall simulation enabled the detection of water movement throughout the soil and how it changes with time. Data collected indicate that infiltration is reduced by water retained by the soil increasing runoff, soil is disaggregated and eroded by material drag, effective porosity decreases with increasing retention of infiltrated water, increased slope gradient causes less water to be retained by the soil and to penetrate to a shallower depth.

AB - ABSTRACT: During the colonial period, especially in the XVIII century, and in the first half of the XIX century, northern South America was very attractive to european scientific expeditions and many of them were directly or indirectly related to geology. The most remarkable ones were the French-Spanish Geodetic Expedition (1735-1743), the Humboldt-Bonpland journey (1800-1804), and the Boussingault Mission (1823-1831). Their contributions were numerous and important and they involved several aspects of scientific and general concern. From a strictly scientific point of view, the works of Pierre Bouguer and Antonio de Ulloa were the most valuable achievements of the expeditions; they dealt with the fundamental laws of gravity, a precious metal named platina, unknown in Europe up to then and many geological observations. Humboldt geological works in South America greatly influenced the final debate among neptunists and plutonists and, in a local scale, they contain the first geological descriptions of many regions of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. On the other hand, Humboldt's interest in the political affairs of the new world was very helpful to the south american independence movements. The Boussingault Mission had a very exceptional nature, as it was not sent from Europe but it was contracted by the government of the young Gran Colombia Republic. Although its institutional results were very poor, it turned out to be very productive in both scientific and cultural matters.

AB - ABSTRACT: The remote barrier islands of Colombia's Pacific Coast exist on a leading edge, subsiding fringe of coalescing small deltas from rivers draining the Northern Andes Mountains. The islands are covered by dense tropical rain forests and are backed by extensive mangrove forests. Four of the 20 islands fringing the Micay, Naya, Yurumangui, Raposo, and Anchicaya Rivers' delta plain near Buenaventura, were studied in detail. El Soldado, Santa Barbara, Chamuscado and El Aji Islands are subjected to moderate wave energy, high sand supply, high mesotidal range, general south-to-north sand transport, and subsidence. The islands are of low elevation (less than 2 m) above spring tide level, and between 5.5 and 8.6 km in length. The shallow stratigraphy is dominated by three general facies: beach sands, washover sands, and mangrove swamp muds. Extension of the overwash facies to almost 2 m below the spring tide line suggests subsidence is a factor in island evolution, which, in part, is a function of an equilibrium between subsidence rate and sand supply. Islands narrow after a subsidence event, and rapidly widen between such events where the sand supply is high. The regressive phase is dominated by accretion of beach ridges that grow as spit-like features along the island front. The islands provide a model for barrier island evolution on a tectonically active, leading-edge coast.
