AB - ABSTRACT: The 13 January 2001 earthquake (M (sub W) 7.6) that occurred off the coast of El Salvador within the subducting slab of the Cocos plate caused nearly 1000 deaths, most of which were due to the hundreds of landslides triggered by the earthquake. The earthquake was well recorded by strong-motion stations within El Salvador and seismograph stations worldwide. Analysis of the strong-motion data is consistent with field observations of damage. Both the recorded accelerations and ground observations provide evidence for topographic amplification of the seismic waves. Magnitude-recurrence curves have been established for El Salvador and adjacent regions. Beta values of 1.96 for Central America and 1.84 for El Salvador (or b values of 0.85 and 0.80) are in the middle range of worldwide averages. The recurrence rate for magnitude 7.0 earthquakes is high-6 yr for Central America and 25 yr for El Salvador. Approximately 50% of large Central American earthquakes originate within the subducting slab.

AB - ABSTRACT: Interpretation of approximately 4500 km of 2D seismic-data offshore and onshore of the Guajira peninsula has been integrated with well-log data, onshore field observations, the interpretation of Landsat TM image and regional geological information to produce a study of the structural style and evolution of the Cuisa fault system of Colombia. Mapping of four horizons in seismic reflection data: (1) at an Eocene (?) Basement surface, (2) in the Upper Lower Miocene, (3) in the Upper Middle Miocene and (4) in the Uppermost Miocene has been used to establish that the Cuisa fault, which may have been located on the trace of a rotated earlier fault that had been active while material from the Great Arc of the Caribbean was being accreted to the west coast of South America, was active in E-W strike-slip motion during the Early Oligocene (34-28 Ma) and had ceased to be a strike-slip fault by Earliest Miocene times (22 Ma). Evidence of this timing comes partly from the ages of sedimentary rocks and deformation episodes in two pull-apart basins on the fault trace. Earlier Cenozoic strike-slip motion is possible on the Cuisa fault but hard to document. After the beginning of the Miocene (22 Ma) the Cuisa fault was dominantly active as a normal fault with a small (<200 m) vertical throw. Early Middle Miocene times (15-12 Ma) were an interval of diminished faulting in the area but renewed activity during Late Miocene and later times (7-0 Ma), which has generated a prominent set of NW trending faults, seen offshore in seismic data, and onshore as a prominent joint set, can be interpreted as linked to the collision of Panama with the west coast of Colombia and the establishment of the Maracaibo tectonic block bounded by the Santa Marta and Bocono strike-slip faults.

AB - ABSTRACT: Subsurface imaging in overthrust areas poses a major challenge to exploration operations today. The abrupt topographic and velocity variations in these areas effect the quality of seismic sections and hinder the interpreters from defining both structure and lithology. This thesis is focused on the image quality around poorly defined target horizons on a 2-D seismic section from a Colombian overthrust area. This area is quite important for the future of exploration over the Llanos and the Eastern Cordillera Basins. I carried out a comprehensive approach of 2-D prestack depth migration over a seismic line acquired in 1997. The line is over the Colombian foothills depicting the transition between the foreland and the cordillera. In addition to depth migration, the work also includes a qualitative evaluation of the data and processing prior to the imaging and the use of gravity modeling to validate the final migrated image. Such a comprehensive use of different geophysical data will help the interpretation of subsurface geology. I show that, with a variable distribution in shots along the profile, data with a smaller subsurface coverage may produce almost the same image as that with those having a higher fold. For a fixed budget I believe that a superior image could be obtained using deeper shots well distributed, giving rise to lower ground roll, rather than make-up shots that provide little additional ground roll rejection. The final migrated image from this study allowed me to constrain the depth and accurately model the gravity data. Although inversion of both gravity and seismic data is inherently non-unique, it is essential that any interpretation honor all of the data available such as gravity, seismic, outcrops, well bore, and knowledge of the structural style.

AB - ABSTRACT: Pollen records from lacustrine sediments of deep basins in the Colombian Andes provide records of vegetation history, the development of the floristic composition of biomes, and climate variation with increasing temporal resolution. Local differences in the altitudinal distribution of present-day vegetation belts in four Colombian Cordilleras are presented. Operating mechanisms during Quaternary Ice-Age cycles that stimulated speciation are discussed by considering endemism in the asteraceous genera Espeletia, Espeletiopsis and Coespeletia. The floristically diverse lower montane forest belt (1000-2300 m) was compressed by ca. 55% during the last glacial maximum (LGM) (20 ka), and occupied the slopes between 800 m and 1400 m during that period. Under low LGM atmospheric p (sub CO2) values, C (sub 4) -dominated vegetation, now occurring below 2200 m, expanded up to ca. 3500 m. Present-day C (sub 3) -dominated paramo vegetation is therefore not an analogue for past C (sub 4) -dominated vegetation (with abundant Sporobolus lasiophyllus). Quercus immigrated into Colombia 478 ka and formed an extensive zonal forest from 330 ka when former Podocarpus-dominated forest was replaced by zonal forest with Quercus and Weinmannia. During the last glacial cycle the ecological tolerance of Quercus may have increased. In the ecotone forests Quercus was rapidly and massively replaced by Polylepis between 45 and 30 ka illustrating complex forest dynamics in the tropical Andes.
