AB - ABSTRACT: The study of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a paradigm for the necessary dialogue of all the geosciences. Ocean-atmosphere interaction is readily accepted as the central actor of the interannual oscillation of the climate system. The influence of ENSO in earth's rotation is not widely acknowledged outside very specialized audiences, nevertheless empirical evidence in support is strong, and theory to explain it is very well founded. ENSO influence on seismicity is even more polemic: observations are not clear and theory is still under development. Some authors postulate that ENSO is a response to the effect of stratospheric volcanic aerosol. This works is a review of the literature related to this issues and some computations related to possible ENSO effect on seismicity are reported. The main conclusion is that issues remain open both with respect to the relation of ENSO with seismicity and with respect to the relation of volcanic aerosols and ENSO.

AB - ABSTRACT: The proposed methodology gives a simple tool to towns in order to evaluate seismic vulnerability using the quantitative determination of seismic waves over ground water and corresponding land surface. This method does not detract from the structural conditions of the houses of the town, because of that is another important factor in the moment of a seismic. This methodology was developed on the basis of many studies performed in the suburbs of Medellin and Pereira, under static condition. The earthquake happened January 25 of 1999 which affected the region of coffee crops, especially Circasia town, the opportunity for the application of this methodology for a town under dynamic condition, considering the particular conditions morphology of the urban center, was used.

AB - ABSTRACT: A system for the recovery of mercury in small-scale gold mining in Colombia has been designed and tested. Distillation of up to 300 g of gold amalgam takes ten to 20 minutes, and more than 90% of the mercury formerly lost in the atmosphere is recovered for recycling. The equipment pays for itself and may be locally built using available materials. It has been widely accepted by miners because of the improved safety to miners and their families. The furnace can be fueled either with gasoline or LP gas. It may also be used for smelting small amounts of gold, thus getting rid of the sponginess which detracts from marketability. The new system is popular in Colombia because of the improved safety to mine operators.

AB - ABSTRACT: The biodegradation of diesel in water was done by means of the microorganisms present in an agriculture soil. The kinetics of biodegradation and adsorption of diesel were determined in order to apply the procedure in soil and water resources contaminated with diesel. The methodology and results of biodegradation and adsorption of diesel in synthetic water is presented with a soil characterization. Degradation takes place using the original microorganisms present in the soil but giving nitrogen as nutrient. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a source of oxygen. The kinetics of diesel volatility are presented too. Kinetics equations for degradation, adsorption and speed constant were determined with the obtained results.

AB - ABSTRACT: Geological Heritage refers to geological and geomorphological formations, landscape and paleontological and mineral sites that form part of nonrenewable natural resources with cultural, educational, scientific value. This paper presents results focused to define, identify, characterize, evaluate and catalogue the regional geological heritage, experiences to structure methods and strategies to recognize, define and value part of the Colombian geological heritage, checks legal and normative aspects, defines mechanisms for the inventory and denomination of places. Finally, it adapts a cataloging method, applying it specifically to the geomorphological glacial heritage in the Santander y (Soto Province), which has a high scientific, educational, cultural and touristic value.

AB - ABSTRACT: The volcanic activity of the isle of Ischia is unmarked in the recent geological history of the Tirrenic area, during which, since ten million years ago, it has produced a process of migration in direction SW of the Italian peninsula, responsible of the formation of deep fractures by which magma has been injected to the surface. In this paper is realized a first approximation to the evaluation of the volcanic risk in this isle, considering for this the dangerous of the potential eruptive process, the elements in risk and the vulnerability of these elements in front of the volcanic phenomenon. The analyses of the dangerous is based not only in the calculation of the probability that a new eruption occurs in a determined zone of the isle, but also in the estimation of the probability with which the different eruptive phenomenology occurred. These typologies conditioned also the value of the vulnerability of the elements of territory, because the destruction level that will produce is different. When the parameter of dangerous is estimated the result of a previous study has been taken into account, in which the probability of occurrence of a new eruption in the isle had been calculated. In spite of the grade of risk is not so high, it should not be underestimated in function of two peculiar characteristics of this territory: its high touristy flux and its insular character.

AB - ABSTRACT: The isle of Ischia is the largest and the most populous of the Neapolitan Archipelago. It forms part of the volcanic complex of the middle-western Italian coast and its activity is related to the presence of deep fractures, associated to the aperture of the Tirreno sea, which began ten million years ago. The record of several historical eruptions reflects the possibility that in the future not so far could be produced a new volcanic event. The calculation of this possibility represents an essential estimation to evaluate adequately the impact that can be occasioned when the volcanic activity starts again in the isle; in fact, in a next paper, the results reached in the present study will be used to evaluate the volcanic risk in Ischia. One of the aspects of analyses has taken into account the reconstruction of a recorder of eruptions that have been verified in the last 55,000 years, this date coincides with the emission of the Tufo Verde, one of the classification scheme proposed by Newhall and Self (1982),to each eruption has been assigned a intensity index, VEI, in order to divide all the record of classes. As follows, by applying the Poisson's statistics, it has determined the absolute probability with which it can be produced a volcanic event of each class of VEI in a lapse of time of ten years. The results reflect that the value of probability of eruption is not high; however, is should no be underestimated, specially with respect to two peculiar characteristics of this territory that influxes directly on the grade of volcanic risk: its high touristy flux and its insular character.

AB - ABSTRACT: Even the most reliable volcanic hazard map will be of little use, unless it is presented in terms that are useful to politics, emergency management officials and citizens. The Volcanic Hazard Map of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (Colombia), was superimposed on Landsat TM 5 data and digital elevation models, in order to generate perspective views for making the volcanic hazard situations comprehensible to the common people. This 3-D visualization methodology could be used with any volcanic hazard map available. The products generated help to improve the communication between volcanologists and people not familiar with volcanoes, in order to avoid confusion, misunderstanding and strained relations between scientists and persons responsible for the public welfare, during any volcanic emergency crisis.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Eastern Cordillera of Colombia has the following common features with the areas that contain sediment hosted submarine exhalative lead zinc deposits in the world: (1) Existence of a major sedimentary basin with several hundreds of kilometers in size, that contain a thick sedimentary sequence and underlain by cratonic basement. (2) Existence of minor second order basins with several tenths of kilometers in size; these basins are evidenced by lateral changes of sediment thickness and facies. (3) Faults and alignments along the margins of the first and second order basins. These faults were active during sedimentation. (4) Small igneous intrusions indicating minor igneous activity during sedimentation. (5) Existence of minor restricted basins (third order basins) with sediments deposited in an euxinic low energy environment. (6) Evidence of faults that were tectonically active during sedimentation in third order basins. In conclusion the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Colombian Eastern Cordillera offer an excellent possibility to find sediment hosted exhalative lead zinc deposits. As an example the favorable geological conditions of the Villeta area are discussed.
