AB - ABSTRACT: The upper Magdalena basin of Colombia is redefined in structural terms so that its northern boundary coincides with the Cambao fault separating it from the middle Magdalena area. It is limited to the west by the Central Cordillera, and extends eastward to the facies change between the Tertiary sediments of the basin and those of the Bogota plateau. Some emergence may have occurred in the pre-Paleocene but major uplift was during the lower Gualanday (pre-Eocene). Subsequent movements were local as indicated by unconformities in the Tertiary section. Volcanic activity, continuous from the late Miocene to Recent in the Central Cordillera, supplied detritus to the Ibague 'fan' deposits. The stratigraphy of the area is discussed in detail from the pre-Cretaceous through the Quaternary. Stratigraphic problems, yet to be resolved, are indicated. A road log for a field trip originating in Bogota and ending in Villeta lists the kilometer post locations of significant geologic outcrops and events. An appendix indicating the important fossil localities along the route with their representative assemblages was prepared by P. E. Taylor.

AB - ABSTRACT: A standardization of names proposed for the Eocene formations of the southwestern portion of the Maracaibo basin in Venezuela is discussed. It has been found that while most of Notestein's nomenclature for the Eocene in Colombia is valid in Venezuela, some changes in rank of units are warranted where identity is obscure or lost. It is noted that sedimentation in this area is distinct from that of the northeastern part of the basin from early Tertiary to the Oligocene. Palynological determinations are used in zonation as fossils are rare and rock types are repetitious in the nonmarine sequences.

AB - ABSTRACT: From a study of the classic upper Miocene locality of Villavieja-La Venta (upper Magdalena region, Colombia), where numerous snake vertebrae have been collected, the date of the appearance of different groups of serpents in South America is considered. There are neither Colubridae nor Viperidae, although the latter are abundant in Pleistocene horizons. The Henophidia arrived in South America before the Tertiary.

AB - ABSTRACT: A new 'bicarinate' turritellid genus from the middle to late Eocene of the Department of Bolivar, Colombia, South America is here described as Wyattella, n. gen. The new genus is characterized by an apically upturned medial primary spiral and the ontogenetic absence of the adapical primary spiral. Two new species, Wyattella allisoni (type species) and Wyattella edwini, are described from different stratigraphic horizons in the same area.

AB - ABSTRACT: This report is based on a systematic analysis of the pollen flora occurring in the upper strata of the Los Cuervos formation and of the principal portion of the Mirador formation. The samples studied were obtained from three vertical drill-hole sections in the region of Tibu, Colombia. Previously undescribed sporomorphs are described and a detailed, palynological zonation is proposed. For the tentative reconstruction of the history and development of the local flora, four types of pollen diagrams were used. The rhythmic changes in the local pollen flora are ascribed to a rhythmic fluctuation of the sea level. An interpretation of the pollen flora renders it plausible that the sediments were deposited in a coastal region. The age of the sediments examined is estimated as ranging from lower to middle Eocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: The quadrangle L-12 of the geologic map of Colombia covers the headwaters of the Meta river where the eastern plains meet the Andes. The rocks of the area comprise pre-Devonian phyllites, metasandstones, and granodiorite, Devonian-Carboniferous clastics and limestones, and Mesozoic-Cenozoic clastics. The core of the geanticlinal Cordillera Oriental, easternmost of the Andean chains of Colombia, traverses the northwestern quarter of the area. The Sierra de las Palomas is the southeasternmost unit, adjoining the plains, with its structural pattern disappearing under cover of Pliocene?-Recent deposits. The stream pattern of the plains suggests tectonic control of the remainder of the area. The main uplift of the Cordillera Oriental occurred in the late Miocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: The change in fluorescence colour of pollen grains with increasing geological age, which could be established in northwestern Europe, has been found as well in large Quaternary sections in Spain and Colombia. Under optimal conservation conditions of the pollen grains, the fluorescence determinations appeared to be a useful tool to make approximate long-distance correlations of such sections, giving additional support to the conventional palynological interpretation. The relatively large number of fluorescence values for the various glacials and interglacials in northwestern Europe has been taken as a standard, with which the others were compared. A general agreement was found between the pollen-analytical dating and the dating by means of fluorescence palynology.

AB - ABSTRACT: The structural provinces of Colombia are briefly outlined and the tectonic and magmatic events discussed in historical order. The Paleozoic is considered as an era of compressional movements which culminated in the Caledonian orogeny. They caused a retreat of the sea to the west Andean area and the temporal consolidation of the east Andean province. In the east Andean province the early Mesozoic is a time of tensional fault movements and extrusion of alkaline magmas. This break-down was followed by an advance of the sea which, in middle Cretaceous time, covered the same geographical area as during the early Paleozoic. The west Andean province remained ocean floor and was successively covered by an increasing amount of tholeiitic basalt flows. At the end of the Cretaceous, compressional forces set in again and the sea retreated from the east Andean province. In the course of several Cenozoic tectonic phases the cordilleras moved upward, while the depressions between them moved downward and were filled with mainly terrestrial deposits of up to 10,000 m in thickness. The final uplift of the Colombian Andes to their present height (up to 5,800 m) took place after early Pleistocene time.
