AB - ABSTRACT: A guidebook was prepared for a field trip (June 24th and 25th, 1966) from Bogota to Villeta, Guaduas, Honda, Mariquita, Armero, and return to Facatativa and Bogota. The trip across the Bogota savanna and down to the Magdalena river valley traversed a Tertiary and Cretaceous section. The formations observed, from the lower Cretaceous Caqueza group to the Pliocene Mesa formation, are described in detailed. The structure of the complex west flank of the Cordillera Oriental, subjected to Cretaceous and to Andean movements, is discussed. Points of geologic interest are logged by kilometer markings along the traverse route.

AB - ABSTRACT: The route to the Chivor mine (Colombia) is through Maestrichtian to Campanian (Cretaceous) sandstones and shales, with some minor lower Tertiary sediments, as far as Choconta. From Choconta to Almeida, the traverse is through approximately 50,000 feet of progressively older Cretaceous sediments associated with the complex eastern Cordillera. The mine is in Cretaceous? well-bedded argillaceous sediments, somewhat limy and locally indurated by secondary siliceous and calcareous impregnations. The emeralds occur in veins, embedded in soft iron-stained clay or limonite. Associated gangue minerals are albite and limonite. The sediments are cut by three prominent faults. Ammonites have been found in the mine beds. The geology of the mine area is from unpublished company reports by V. A. Gilles, Charles Mentzel, and Paul W. Johnson.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Nevada de Santa Marta sierra, an isolated horst on the north coast of Colombia, is composed predominantly of granite in its central and northwestern parts, with intervening zones of weakly metamorphosed Paleozoic migmatites. On the southeast margin, rhyolites and Jurassic sediments are the principal elements of the country rock, and remnants of Cretaceous terrain are found in the east. In this essentially geographic study, in addition to a summary of the geology, data on the relief, glaciation, and water supply are also included.

AB - ABSTRACT: The sequence of orogenic and epeirogenic events in the Andes of Colombia is outlined. Folding during Precambrian and Caledonian orogenic phases was succeeded by epeirogenic movements accompanied by block-faulting in late Devonian time. That such movements continued from the Devonian to the Cretaceous is clearly revealed at the west margin of the Santander massif. Intense movements, with stronger vertical than horizontal components, occurred in Cretaceous-Tertiary times, culminating in uplift of the Andes.

AB - ABSTRACT: A number of pollen diagrams from the Llanos Orientales of Colombia and the Rupununi savannas of Guyana show that the actual open savannas were preceded by a closed savanna woodland or dry forest with Byrsonima as principal pollen producer. Human influence during the last 3000 years was apparently an important factor in the extension of open savannas. Nevertheless, open savannas occurred also earlier in the Holocene. Even in approximately late-glacial time, open savanna sometimes extended temporarily at the expense of the dry forest or woodland. It seems that climatic and atmospheric influences (periods of very dry climate, lightning) were the cause of these extensions. The pollen diagrams suggest anyhow a very unstable equilibrium between the woody Byrsonima association and the herbaceous open savanna. In the north Rupununi savannas dry forest dominated in most of what probably corresponds to late-glacial time. Open savanna was common or dominating there during a shorter interval of the above-mentioned 'late-glacial' and during most of the Holocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Peru-Chile trench is a continuous topographic deep whose structural continuation extends southward to the Drake Passage. Although the crustal thickness beneath the topographic axis of the trench seems normal for the ocean-continental margin transition zone, geophysical data indicate a markedly thinner crust beneath the offshore side of the trench. Most of the trench contains little or no sediment, probably because of effective sediment traps on the continental slope. The magnetic anomalies observed in some areas correlate well with the basement topography. The negative gravity belt occurring west of Colombia and Peru in water less than 1000 m deep is presumably the continuation of the Bolivar geosyncline axis onshore in Ecuador and Peru. The Peru-Chile trench is complicated off the coast of Ecuador by the transverse Carnegie ridge. The trench is crossed also, off the coast of southern Peru, by the Nasca ridge, a broad isostatically compensated structure that has little effect on the trench.

The principal structural elements comprise the stable platform in the south, the east-west-trending, fault-bounded Cocinas trough of Jurassic age that lies north of the platform, the Jarara and Macuire uplifts located respectively in the interior and northwest parts of the peninsula, and structures of the Tertiary basin that trends.
