AB - ABSTRACT: Saline deposits in South America range in age from Cambrian to Recent; they are present in both the mobile Andean belt and in the stable intracratonic basins. Recent saline deposits include the great and famous 'salares' extending from southern Peru into northern Chile and Argentina; the caliche deposits on the arid western slopes of the central Andes; and also the numerous 'salinas' found mainly along the desertic coasts of Chile and Peru. Salt diapirs are common along the Andes, especially in Peru, Chile, and Colombia.

AB - ABSTRACT: As much as 12,000 m of nonmarine Cenozoic deposit is preserved in the Upper Magdalena valley between the Central and Eastern Cordilleras in southwestern Colombia. Near the end of the Cretaceous period early Andean deformation uplifted the Central Cordillera. Concomitantly the sea began to retreat from the East Andean geosyncline whose axis lay along the site of the Eastern Cordillera. After withdrawal of the sea the latest Cretaceous and Paleocene Guaduas formation, having an average thickness of 1,000 m, accumulated on a poorly drained lowland stretching eastward to the Llanos. It consists of drab, mottled, and reddish-brown mudstone, and dark-gray sandstone with abundant dark grains of Cretaceous chert and mudstone. Carbonaceous deposits are more common than in any other Cenozoic formation. During the Cenozoic era a succession of disturbances generated four major alternations of coarse- and fine-grained deposits. The Central Cordilleran provenance persisted, but detritus also was derived increasingly from local sources within the basin and on the site of the Eastern Cordillera, and the Cretaceous sedimentary mantle progressively was stripped from basement blocks.

AB - ABSTRACT: Taxonomy and evolution of Cretaceous ammonites are discussed in the light of studies during the past decade. An attempt is made to demonstrate that taxonomy based on descriptive morphology, as is done in many parts of the volume of the 'Treatise on invertebrate paleontology' on Ammonoidea (Arkell and others, 1957) can only result in artificial systematics. A natural system can be based only on detailed morphogenetic methods, as used by Wiedmann (1962-66) and O. H. Schindewolf (1951, 1961-66) in studies of Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites; these methods are based on study of the ontogeny of the suture and shell.

AB - ABSTRACT: This publication consists of four parts with the following title: New late Cretaceous palynomorphs from southern South America; A new species of Gothanipollis Krutsch from Chile; Hypocrititriletes, a new trilete spore genus from Argentina; Palynomorphs from the Zipaquira salt, Colombia. Descriptions of three new palynomorph form genera and new species of Azolla and Ariadnaesporites are included in the first part. Gothanipollis chilensis n. sp., described in the second part, is from a late Tertiary locality. The material on which Hypocrititriletes n. gen., described in the third part, is based is from Cretaceous localities in southern Argentina. The palynomorph assemblage reported in the fourth part suggests a Portlandian (Jurassic)-Albian (Cretaceous) age for the shale from which it was collected. The shale is interbedded within the Zipaquira salt, indicating that the salt is younger than previously dated.

AB - ABSTRACT: The first occurrence of a fossil stomatopod (Crustacea: Malacostraca) from South America, Paleosquilla brevicoxa gen. et sp. nov., is recorded from the Cretaceous of Colombia. This species exhibits some primitive characters which possibly indicate a phyletic position near the base of the modern families.

AB - ABSTRACT: In this study, a synthesis of ideas presented in several previous papers (Dengo, 1962-67), Central America is defined as the area extending from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, south to the lowlands of Atrato in northwestern Colombia. Tectonic history is reconstructed for the three main geologic divisions: northern Central America, underlain by Paleozoic crystalline rocks of continental crustal type; southern Central America, underlain by Mesozoic basic rocks of oceanic crustal type; Pacific marginal zone, comprising the Middle American trench and related Quaternary volcanic chain. Structural and paleogeographic relations with the Caribbean region are discussed. Eight morphotectonic units are established, each presenting a characteristic relief expressing the underlying geologic structure.

AB - ABSTRACT: This paper summarizes available data on climatic changes in the Caribbean and northern South America. In Colombia, northwestern Venezuela, the Leeward Islands, and Barbados, the pluvial periods coincided with the glacial periods at higher latitudes. The evidence for Guiana and Surinam is sufficient to establish the climatic evolution, but the climate seems to have been less humid during the glacial periods than at present, which would correspond to a 10 degrees shift in the arid belt.
