The police department would like to take this opportunity to remind residents not to become complacent now that the worst is over.  Prepare for the next event by creating a disaster kit and having a family emergency plan.  Tips on disaster planning can be found on the American Red Cross website.

Residents who wish to engage in Halloween Trick-or-Treating are encouraged to do so this Sunday, November 11th, from 4 pm to 8pm.  The weather is forecast to be absolutely perfect.  For safety’s sake please have small children home before dark.

Weather events of the last ten days, which claimed dozens of lives right next door in New York, resulted in no deaths or serious injuries in the Town of Greenwich.  We have persevered through what could easily have been a catastrophe.  While the planning and leadership displayed by local government officials certainly played no small part in our success, there are two groups who should be held out for special recognition.  The frontline Public Works employees, municipal parks and tree workers, utility company line crews, firefighters, EMTs and police officers who, quite literally, wore the “boots on the ground” during this event all deserve our heartfelt thanks.

Additionally however, Greenwich residents should thank each other.  That we can rely on our community to come together, to check on that elderly neighbor who hasn’t had power for a few days, to help each other and in some cases, to save each other, was critical to our collective success.  Going forward, we should all endeavor to take that same commitment to community and rather than permit it to blow away with the storm, leverage it to improve our shared circumstance.  Meet your neighbors, patronize a local business, donate to a Town charity or volunteer with a civic group.  The strength of our community has saved us once and it can save us again.

Residents will be updated via this same system the next time an emergency occurs.  Until then, please remain civil and stay safe.

Town of Greenwich Message, Wednesday, November 7, 2012:

Good afternoon.  This message is being sent on behalf of First Selectman Peter Tesei.  It contains a weather advisory concerning the Nor’easter hitting our area today.

The first named Winter Storm of the season – Athena – is expected to increase in intensity as it moves into our region this afternoon and overnight.  The latest forecast models show an extended period of high winds and potentially moderate flooding in low lying areas.  High tides will occur in Greenwich Harbor at 5:01 PM tonight and 5:35 AM tomorrow morning.  Obviously these will be the most critical periods for storm surge-related flooding which may be several feet over normal.  Keep in mind that Hurricane Sandy has damaged many sea walls and in some areas changed the outline of coastal areas and inlets.  The high tide flooding we are all accustomed to during previous storms may be very different with Winter Storm Athena.  A voluntary evacuation of immediate coastal areas is being encouraged.  The emergency shelter at the Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.

Winds will intensify after dark and are forecast to reach 25-30 MPH sustained speeds with gusts between 45 and 60 MPH.  With many trees and structures already compromised by damage from Hurricane Sandy, there is significant potential for wind-related damage.   Please remain indoors during the storm - especially during periods of high winds.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Center will remain open throughout this weather event.  The Town has requested that utility companies, including Connecticut Light and Power, keep resources already in Town here to make emergency repairs if required.

Residents are advised to monitor local media outlets for up to date forecast information.  WGCH Radio – AM1490 will remain on the air throughout the storm.

If you must be outdoors, exercise extreme caution and be wary of road conditions.  Debris remains on many portions of the right-of-way from Hurricane Sandy.

Additional announcements will be made via this same system as warranted.

Please remain calm, stay indoors and keep safe.

End of Message:

Town of Greenwich Message, Tuesday, November 6, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the daily update on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts for Election Day, Tuesday, November 6th.  Please don’t forget to vote.

The Town remains in a declared state of emergency and the Emergency Operations Center remains open.  As of this evening, all but 5% of Connecticut Light and Power customers in Town remain without service.  Even though we are down to 5%, hundreds of CL&P crews remain dedicated to power restoration in Greenwich.

Temperatures tonight are expected to be very cold again tonight.  If you are without power or heat, the shelter at Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.  Please feel free to come to the shelter.

The Nor’easter scheduled to arrive in our area tomorrow night into Thursday seems to be diminishing in strength.  While some wind gusts may still be strong, the likelihood of extremely cold temperatures and flooding potential seem reduced.  Obviously that’s a good thing – if for no other reason than all of us here at the Emergency Operations Center could really use some sleep.

While the Police Department has not yet had any fraud-related complaints, we want to remind everyone that there are always opportunistic criminals out there looking to victimize people after disasters.  You should only give money to established national charities or local charity groups with whom you have already established a relationship.  Avoid in-person and telephone solicitations from home repair contractors you’ve never heard of or who claim to be affiliated with a state or federal disaster relief agency.  Always ask contractors for their Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor Registration Number and check the number by calling the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection at 1-800-842-2649 or checking their website at ct.gov/dcp. Never pay cash for repairs.  Legitimate contractors will neither ask for nor expect payment in cash.  If you need a contractor ask your neighbors for someone they know is reliable or ask your insurance company for a referral.

The Holly Hill Lane Transfer Station will be open tomorrow and residents may dispose of their own storm-related organic debris at no cost.  Commercial landscapers and haulers are still required to pay normal fees.

Gasoline Filling Station lines are lessening as the fuel supply to the New York metro area begins to improve.  The Police Department continues to monitor this situation closely.

Schools will be open tomorrow, November 7th.  There remain many partial street obstructions and sidewalk obstructions in Town.  If your child rides the bus or if you drive your child to school, please allow extra time.  If your child walks to school, we encourage you to go with your child tomorrow to help ensure the walking route is safe or, at minimum, reinforce to your child he or she should avoid any downed wire and about how to safely navigate sidewalk obstructions.

As a reminder, the Town is suggesting that those residents who wish to engage in Halloween Trick-or-Treating do so this Sunday, November 11th from 4 to 8 pm.  With the time change and the early onset of darkness, we are encouraging children to get out early and return home before dark.

Residents will be updated via this same system tomorrow evening.  Until then, please be patient, remain civil, keep warm and stay safe.

My http://www.cl-p.com/ electricity bill for October 2012 was $156.99 and 987 kWh and 29.03 kWh per day for 34 days with an average temperature of 55.1 degrees Fahrenheit.

For October 2011, it was $162.04 and 969 kWh and 33.41 kWh per day for 29 days with an average temperature of 54.5 degrees Fahrenheit.  CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 5:10 P.M..  I have seven external backup hard drives.  I made up a list of all of the backups and file contents of the external hard drives, and I printed out two copies.  I have enough room on the Rosewell external hard drive to backup Windows 8 on the third IBM ThinkCentre, when I install it.  There is a backup on the Rosewell external hard drive that I do not really need.  There are also a few other 20 gigabyte backup on another hard drive, that I probably do not need.  CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 1:00 P.M..  I chatted with a friend.  I was told that the Melville, Long Island still does not have electricity.  I showered, and I cleaned up.  I threw out the garbage.  It is snowing out.  CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 11:55 A.M..  I chatted with a friend.  The primary reason that I have not put Windows 8 Pro on the third IBM ThinkCentre is that I do not have an external hard drive with enough storage space to back it up.  I currently do not have the extra funds to buy one either.  I might be getting my Renter's Rebate soon.  I also have to pay about $60 in the near future to get an oil and oil filter change over at Oil Star in Stamford, Connecticut.  I will now shower and clean up.  CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 10:55 A.M..  I woke up at 9 A.M..  I ate breakfast of oatmeal with honey and milk and sliced banana, a toasted English muffin with olive oil, a 12 ounce glass of watered down punch, and a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I washed the breakfast dishes.  I made my bed.  CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 12:35 A.M..  I ate a fairly fresh muffin.  I will now shut down the primary work computer, and I will go to bed soon.   CIO

<888> 11/07/12 Wednesday 12:15 A.M..  I chatted with a relative.  I ate a 19 ounce Stauffer's lasagna with meat sauce and grated parmesan and Romano cheese and a 12 ounce glass of http://www.coke.com/ .  I tested the computers that I moved around, and they all work just fine.  On the Abit computer, I had to replace the Microsoft Wireless 6000 V3 keyboard and mouse set, since its sending unit was broken, and I put on a new Microsoft Wireless 800 keyboard and mouse set.  CIO

<888> 11/06/12 Tuesday 9:25 P.M..  I moved the Abit computer from along side the Ethan Allen recliner to in front of the mahogany bureau with one Eizo LCD monitor.  I moved the fourth IBM ThinkCentre from in front of the mahogany bureau to the hallway entrance with the Dell 20 inch LCD monitor.  I moved the third IBM Thinkcentre to along side the Ethan Allen recliner with the 22 inch Acer LCD monitor and the 19 inch Acer LCD monitor from the second IBM ThinkCentre.  I moved the second Eizo 19 inch LCD monitor from the Abit computer to the second IBM ThinkCentre.  I thus have the third IBM ThinkCentre set up with two LCD monitors, which will be better when I get around to installing Windows 8 Pro on it.  I chatted with a relative.  CIO

<888> 11/06/12 Tuesday 5:25 P.M..  I threw out the garbage.  I drove over to the New Lebanon school, and I voted straight line Republican Party.  I donated a dollar to the United States Military police German Shepard dogs from Afghanistan rescue fund.  I then drove over to downtown Greenwich Avenue.  I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue and the train station area.  They are in the process of tearing down the old Thataway restaurant building.  It is about half way torn down.  They will be building a new three story shops and condominium building at that location.  I chatted with a local walker.  I used the bathroom at the Senior and the Arts center.  I toured CVS.  After my walk, I sat out for a while. I then drove over to the Greenwich Library, and I read http://www.pcworld.com/ magazine.  I toured the DVD collection on the second floor.  I checked out "Windows 8 for Dummies".  I then went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought a quart of Stop and Shop lemon juice for $2.29, a two pound bag of baby carrots for $3.29, bananas for .79 a pound for .96 and broccoli crowns for $1.99 a pound for $1.01 for $7.55 total.  They do not have any one pound DAK or Plumrose canned hams.  I was told that Port Chester, New York had some minor flooding downtown.  Rye, New York still does not have electrical power.  On the way home, I noticed the Shell Station and the Mobil station on West Putnam Avenue have no gasoline lines, and they are opened.  The police are still at the Shell station to monitor the situation.  I picked up my mail, and I put away the groceries.  I chatted with a friend.  Lots of areas in Long Island still have no electricity.  Recently at the Stop and Shop, I have noticed, they have little packages of two sealed filet mignons for $15.99 a pound, sea scallops for $13.99 a pound, and fresh lobster sandwiches for $5.99.  CIO

<888> 11/06/12 Tuesday 11:40 A.M..  Round Hill Service Station - expert auto repair - Greenwich, CT 06831 probably still has gasoline.

I will now shower and clean up and go out to vote and maybe go for a walk.  CIO

<888> 11/06/12 Tuesday 10:45 A.M..  I woke up at 8:30 A.M..  I chatted with a friend twice.  I ate breakfast of oatmeal with honey and milk and sliced banana, a toasted English muffin with olive oil, a 12 ounce glass of watered down punch, and a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I washed the breakfast dishes.  I made my bed.  CIO

<888> 11/05/12 Monday 11:55 P.M..  I will now shut down the primary work computer, and I will go to bed soon.  It seems like it might be getting cold out, but I am use to the colder temperatures after all of these years up in the North Country.
