The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 22^nd October 1970 was read and approved.

The Clerk submitted a Statement showing the Expenses involved in the Annual Dinner and this showed a loss of £5.12. 9d. the Deacon stated that he would make payment of this. The matter of financial loss at Suppers and Dinners was discussed and it was agreed that this should not be met by the Deacon. It was agreed tat as far as possible these functions should pay their own way and that a Suspense Account be set up into which any surplus could be paid and from which any losses could be met.

The Clerk reported that the Principals of the here Colleges had decided to accept the donation of the prizes and had given details of the method of awarding these all; of which were acceptable to the Committee. It was agreed that the names of the prizes be “The Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee (Ralph Pride Bequest)”.

The Clerk submitted Applications for Membership from Messers T F W Caird, J M Fraser, J A Inverarity, J R Little, J P McPherson, J I Merry and J R Munro. These applications were approved by the Committee, a further two applications were expected and it was remitted to the Deacon, Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve these.

It was agreed that the Toast List be the Nine Incorporated Trades, the Legal Profession and the New Members. The reply to the Toast to the Legal Profession would be made by B C Bowman and the Deacon undertook the arrangements for the Craftsman to propose the Toast.

A Specimen Menu was produced and it was agreed that the price of he Ticket be £1.50. It was remitted to the Clerk to make the usual arrangements.

It was intimated that the Autumn Making would take place on 6^th October 1971 being the Wednesday before the Kirkin of the Trades ad that the Annual Dinner would be held on Wednesday 24^th November 1941.

Applications for admission to the Craft were submitted from Mr G D Anderson, J D Boyd, W Clunie, J A Inverarity, A S Kyle and H B S Lawson. It was intimated that it was expected that Applications would be received from Mr B C Bowman and Mr R Ogilvy Smith and it was expected that the eight applications be approved.

The Toast List was discussed and it was agreed that e Toast be “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, this to be proposed by Mr A S Brand and to be replied by an Ex-Convener to be arranged by Convener R Ogilvy Smith who would be with the new Members. It was further agreed that Ex-Deacon Dr O Taylor Brown propose the Toast of “The New Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk” and that the Vote of Thanks be given by a Member of the Committee.

The Menu for the Supper was considered and approved and it was agreed that the cost of the Ticket for the Supper be £1.50.

It was further agreed to ask the Principal of the University of Dundee to have the new Bonnet at the Supper that it might be seen by he Members. The Deacon mentioned that we had presented the new Bonnet to the Principal of the University at a Ceremony on 1^st July 1971 when there had been five Ex-Deacons present.

The Accounts of the craft for the year to 30^th June 1971 were submitted and approved. Arising out of these there was discussion on the practice of the Deacon and the Boxmaster making up any loss on the expenses of the Suppers and Dinners, this arising mainly from the cost of hospitality extended to guests. It was agreed that as far as possible the price of the Tickets for the Suppers and the Dinners should be such that there be if possible no loss but if the Deacon and the Boxmaster did wish to make a contribution in the event of a loss then this was to be limited to an amount not exceeding £21 for each in any one year.

The use of the Funds of this Bequest was considered and it was agreed that in addition to the prize of £10 to each of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee College of Commerce and College of Technology there also be made a prize of £5 each year for a three year period to the Department of General Practice of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dundee.

It was intimated that the Annual Dinner of the craft would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 24^th Novembers 1971 and the Boxmaster added that the principal Speakers for this had already been arranged.

The Clerk reported the Committee Meetings were held on 22^nd October 1970, 17^th February 1971 and 31^st August 1971

The Clerk submitted the Accounts of the Craft for the Year ending 30^th June 1971 an Abstract of what had already been circulated to Members. The Clerk reported that the Income had exceeded the expenditure by £50.63 but this was due to the fact ha here had been less than the normal Expenses in the year and also that there had been included payments as Prizes under the Ralph Pride Bequest.

(a) Deacon

On the motion of Deacon A C McNab seconded by Craftsman Harold Adams, Boxmaster Chessor Matthew was unanimously elected Deacon for the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his thanks to the Members of the Craft for appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his earnest endeavour to serve the Craft to he best of his ability. He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon A C McNab and had pleasure in making this presentation to him of the Ex-Deacons badge. Ex-Deacon A C McNab stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon for the past two years and thanked the Boxmaster and Members of the Committee for their co-operations and assistance.

(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of Deacon Chessor Matthew seconded by Ex-Deacon A C McNab, Dr R Y Ritchie was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting Office Dr Ritchie thanked ha Members for the Honour they paid him in appointing him to this High Office.

(c) Clerk

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.

(d) Committee

It was intimated that Messers ~ R D Bruce, R H Gilbert, S G Henderson and R Roscoe retired from Office and were not eligible for re-election.

The following were appointed as Members of the Committee to hold office for two years: Mr J A Carr proposed by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown and seconded by J R Gellatly. The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 31^st August 1971 was read and approved.

The Clerk reported that the proceeds of the sale of Tickets for the Supper held on 6^th October 1971 amounted to £102 but that the expenses were £96. 38 leaving a surplus of £5.62.

Letters from he present Pensioners were read to he Meeting and there has been no changes in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that the five Applicants should again be submitted to the Nine Trades Court, the Committee authorised the Deacon and Boxmaster to sign the List of Poor.

The Clerk reported that the £1000 which had been bequeathed to the Craft by the late Mr Ralph Pryde had originally been in a Mortgage with Dundee Corporation and this Mortgage fell due for renewal on 11^th November 1971. After discussion it was agreed that the Mortgage should not be renewed but that the Funds be uplifted and re-invested in 6% Funding Stock 1993 which would give a higher income and also some Capital appreciation.

Arrangements of the Annual Dinner were considered ane the Clerk submitted specimen Menus. It was agreed that the Menu be selected at he cost of £1.60 and after consideration of the expenses it was agreed that he price of the Tickets be fixed at £2.50.

The Deacon stated that the provisional Toast List was as follows:

“The City and Trade of Dundee” to be proposed by Mr J R Finnie, the Reply by Lord Provost Fitzgerald.

The Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” to be proposed by Sheriff G L Cox and the Reply by Convener R Ogilvy Smith. “The Guests” would be proposed by the Deacon and the Reply by Mr C E Norwell Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow. The Boxmaster would propose the “vote of Thanks”.

It was further agreed that there be a Toast to the Architectural Profession, this to be provided by Mr Ian Robertson and the Reply by Mr Sinclair Gauldie. The Vote of Thanks to be by Mr Allan Brown. It was agreed that the Deacon and Clerk make the arrangements with the speakers.

The Menu for the Supper was considered and approved and it was agreed that the cost of the Tickets for he Supper be £1.50.

He reported that the income over expenditure amounted to £34.51, this due in the main to the fact that more new Members had been admitted during the year. In addition the proceeds from the sale of Tickets fir the Suppers and Annual Dinner had been slightly in excess of the expenses. The Accounts were approved on the motion of Ex-Deacon Drummond seconded by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown.
