Ocean City High School Student Council
In August, the Ocean City High School Student Council participated in the annual Happy Home Orphanage Walk, which took place on the Ocean City Boardwalk and benefits an overseas orphanage. The Council also organized its August Car Wash which helps to raise funds for the New Jersey Association of Student Councils State Charity. Each year the Student Council helps support the NJASC state charity. This year’s charity is The Family Reach Foundation. Family Reach is an organization that raises money for those families whose lives have been affected by cancer.
The Student Council attended a Fall Business Meeting at the College of New Jersey run by the NJASC. The Council attended a seminar about leadership and workshops that demonstrated how other schools manage their councils.

PEER MEDIATION
On Friday, October 30, 2009, co-advisors Ms. Mary McDowell and Ms. Nicole McMaster along with the help of Officer Chuck Cusack of OCPD held the 3rd annual training for Peer Mediation. Twenty-nine students attended this training in the community room of the high school which included 18 current mediators and 11 new trainees. Club President is senior Roxanne Lloyd and Vice-President is senior Colleen Kelly. In addition to Roxanne and Colleen, seniors Carly Montenaro and Magi Kernan have been an integral part of the program’s success the past three years.
Peer Mediation is a formal process used for resolving conflicts between two or more parties. Students must learn the specific skills and procedures before a mediation can begin. A team of two students work together to help disputants in conflict resolve their issue. Mediators use active listening skills and paraphrasing skills to hear both sides of the problem. Then they help the disputants find a solution that works for both and seal the deal with a written agreement. These skills and more were presented during the training. Students worked together to act out conflict resolution styles, practice role playing, and write a contract.
