Timothy W. Smith, NY Times: the Jets headed off a possibly longer and acrimonious stalemate with their first-round selection, linebacker Marvin Jones, by coming to terms with him today on a five-year deal worth about $6 million, including a signing bonus of about $3.5 million. Incentives could raise the value of the package to $7.5 million.
Gordon Forbes, USA Today: The Jets closed the deal with agent Drew Rosenaus by agreeing to reward Jones with a $ 2.5 million Pro Bowl bonus in the fifth year. He gets the bonus if he makes the Pro Bowl any time before that. Assuming Jones is a Pro Bowler, he would earn $ 3.4 million in his fifth season. Jones also gets a separate $ 250,000 Pro Bowl bonus that is added to his base and rolled over the following year.
Rich Cimini, NY Daily News: Jones' contract is a six-year deal for $ 15 million, including a $ 2.3 million signing bonus. Originally, the bonus was supposed to be $ 2.8 million, but it had to be reworked to stay within salary-cap guidelines. His '97 base salary drops from $ 730,000 to $ 525,000, but his cap number increases from $ 1.38 million to $ 1.56 million.
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Jones received a five-year, $12 million deal from the New York Jets, which includes a $3 million signing bonus. He'll have base salaries of $650,000 (2002), $1 million (2003), $1.65 million (2004), $2.2 million (2005) and $3.5 million (2006). In 2003 and 2004, $500,000 worth of Jones' salaries are guaranteed

Peter King, SI.com: the Jets, should they choose to keep Law after this season, have an $11 million option bonus due Law in March. If they choose to pay Law that bonus -- highly questionable unless Law has a very good year, because he'll be 32 in February -- the final six years of his contract would then kick in -- at base salaries of $3 million in 2006, $4 million in 2007, and $6 million in each of 2008, 2009 and 2010. If the Jets choose not to pay Law the $11 million, he'll be a free agent next winter… Law can supplement his pay this year with a number of incentives. For example: For every game he's active on the 45-man roster this year, the Jets will pay him $62,500. If he's active for 16 games, that's an extra $1 million. If he plays 85 percent of the snaps on defense for the Jets, he'll earn an additional $500,000. Here's the biggie: He'll make an additional $4 million if he plays 95 percent of the defensive snaps and the Jets make the playoffs. As an illustration, if Law plays nickel back, is active every week and the Jets go 8-8, he'll make $3.5 million. If Law starts and plays all but a handful of plays -- possible, though not likely -- and the Jets make the playoffs, he'll make $8 million.

NY Times: He was supposed to earn $900,000 this year in the final season of his contract. Instead, he will earn $3.1 million, including a signing bonus of $2.1 million. Signing bonuses can be prorated over the life of the contract. Thus only about $400,000 will count against this year's salary cap. Lewis's five-year deal is worth $11.6 million and includes annual $50,000 payments for spending the month of March working out at the Jets' training facility in Hempstead, L.I. He will also receive a $400,000 bonus each year merely for reporting on time to summer camp.
Judy Battista, NY Times: Lewis accepted the current one-year tender for a franchise linebacker -- which is worth $4.187 million -- while negotiations will continue toward a long-term deal.

Rich Cimini, NY Daily News: Lucas is making the minimum salary of $325,000, but he can make a maximum of $380,000 with incentive bonuses. He won't hit that ceiling, but he has a chance to make an extra $200,000 with various bonuses. That would include a $150,000 bonus for appearing in at least 61% of the team's plays. He will be cutting it close on that one.

Gerald Eskenazi, NY Times: Malamala, a restricted free agent who had been negotiating an offer sheet with the Rams, has instead agreed on a deal with the Jets that will pay him $ 5 million over four years. The terms: $ 1.1 million signing bonus and salaries of $ 750,000, $ 950,000, $ 1.05 million and $ 1.15 million.
Paul Needell, NY Daily News: Malamala, who is coming off knee surgery and may not be ready when the season opens, was scheduled to make $ 950,000 this season but now will get a base salary of $ 400,000. Playing-time incentives make it possible for him to recoup the $ 550,000 reduction, depending upon when and if he cracks the starting lineup during the year.
Rich Cimini, NY Daily News: Malamala, who was released Saturday, re-signed yesterday for his old salary ($ 400,000)…
