ELECTRICAL MACHINE SHOP (EMS)
OF CHATTOGRAM POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

The Electrical Machine Shop (EMS) of Chattogram Polytechnic Institute is a well-equipped facility that provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the electrical engineering field. The shop is equipped with a variety of tools and equipment, including lathes, mills, drills, and saws. Students use these tools and equipment to learn how to machine and assemble electrical components, such as motors, generators, and transformers.

The electrical machine shop is an important part of the Chattogram Polytechnic Institute's curriculum. The shop provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the electrical engineering field.
Here are some of the specific activities that students can do in the electrical machine shop:

  • Machine electrical components, such as motors, generators, and transformers.

  • Assemble electrical components into working systems.

  • Troubleshoot electrical problems.

  • Learn about electrical safety.

  • Gain experience working with electrical tools and equipment.

The electrical machine shop is a valuable resource for students who are interested in a career in electrical engineering. The shop provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the field.

ALTERNATOR SHORT CIRCUIT TEST

The short circuit test is a method of determining the internal impedance of an alternator. It is performed by shorting the alternator terminals and applying a variable voltage to the field winding. The current drawn by the field winding is measured, and the voltage drop across the short circuit is also measured. The internal impedance of the alternator can then be calculated using the following formula:
Z = V / I
where:

  • Z is the internal impedance of the alternator in ohms

  • V is the voltage applied to the field winding in volts

  • I is the current drawn by the field winding in amperes

The short circuit test is a valuable tool for troubleshooting alternator problems. If the internal impedance of the alternator is too high, it may indicate that there is a problem with the stator windings. If the internal impedance of the alternator is too low, it may indicate that there is a problem with the rotor windings.
To perform a short circuit test on an alternator, you will need the following equipment:

Instructions:

  1. Connect the variable voltage source to the field winding of the alternator.

  2. Connect the ammeter in series with the short circuit.

  3. Connect the voltmeter across the short circuit.

  4. Gradually increase the voltage applied to the field winding until the current drawn by the field winding reaches its maximum value.

  5. Record the voltage and current readings.

  6. Calculate the internal impedance of the alternator using the formula above.

The short circuit test should be performed at several different field currents to ensure that the results are accurate. The results of the short circuit test can be used to determine the following:

  • The condition of the stator and rotor windings

  • The amount of load that the alternator can safely carry

  • The efficiency of the alternator

The short circuit test is a valuable tool for troubleshooting and maintaining alternators. It is a relatively simple test that can be performed by anyone with basic electrical skills.
