The Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant located in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali District in southern Bangladesh. It is a joint venture between the North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (NWPGCL) and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC).
The plant consists of two units, each with a capacity of 660 MW. The cost was estimated initially around US$1.56 billion; the total project cost was US$2.48 billion. The plant has been built on an area of 397-hectare. The first unit came into commercial operation on the 15th May 2020 and the second unit on the 8th December 2020. Presently, it is the largest electricity generating unit of Bangladesh that is currently in operation. On the 21st March 2022, PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the power plant after it was fully completed.
The plant uses ultra-supercritical technology, which is a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to generate electricity from coal. The plant is also equipped with a number of pollution control measures, including flue gas desulfurization and electrostatic precipitators.
The Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant is a major addition to Bangladesh's electricity generation capacity. The plant is expected to help to meet the country's growing demand for electricity and to reduce the country's reliance on imported oil.
However, the plant has also been criticized for its environmental impact. The plant is located in a coastal area, and there are concerns that the plant could pollute the environment and contribute to climate change.
Despite these concerns, the Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant is a major step forward for Bangladesh's energy sector. The plant is expected to help to meet the country's growing demand for electricity and to reduce the country's reliance on imported oil.
