Ventilation and gas-freeing

• Gas-freeing of cargo tanks, double hull spaces, ballast tanks, pipe tunnels and cofferdams:
• Provision shall be made for the gas-freeing of cargo tanks, double hull spaces, ballast tanks, pipe tunnels and cofferdams.
• Where fans are permanently fitted for gas-freeing of tanks having connections to cargo oil lines, measures are to be taken, e.g. by removing spool pieces of the ventilation ducting or by using blank flanges, to ensure that neither cargo nor vapours can penetrate into the fans when not in use.
• The inlet openings in cargo tanks used for gas-freeing or purging with inert gas shall be located either immediately below deck or at a height of 1 m above the tank bottom.
