Gas-freeing
of cargo tanks

Provision shall be made for
the gas-freeing of cargo tanks
, double hull spaces, ballast tanks, pipe tunnels and cofferdams.
Where fans are permanently fitted for gas-freeing of tanks having
connections to cargo oil lines
,
measures are to be taken
, e.g. by removing spool pieces of the ventilation ducting
or by using blank flanges
, to ensure that neither cargo nor vapours can penetrate into the fans when not in use.
The inlet openings in cargo tanks used for gas-freeing or purging with inert gas shall be located either immediately below deck or at a height of 1 m above the tank bottom.
