- An ear discharge that has been present for less than 2 weeks is treated as an acute ear infection. You do not need more accurate information about how long the discharge has been present.
LOOK for pus draining from the ear. Pus draining from the ear is a sign of infection, even if the child no longer has any pain. Look inside the child's ear to see if pus is draining from the ear.
