4. Responsibility
 Clients are clearly the engineer’s first responsibility but engineers also have a responsibility to society
 Examples of responsible social actions are to
 disperse information that can advance the profession
 protect the public trust in the engineering profession by blowing the whistle on nonprofessional conduct
 assisting in some instances where worthy causes cannot afford professional services
 protect society from dangerous practices
Important notes
 The codes serve as a starting point for ethical decision making.
 Express the commitment to ethical conduct shared by members of a profession. It is important to note that ethical codes do not establish new ethical principles.

CpE Laws and Professional Practice They simply reiterate principles and standards that are already accepted as responsible engineering practice.
 Expresses these principles in a coherent, comprehensive, and accessible manner.
 Defines the roles and responsibilities of professionals.
 Not a recipe for ethical behavior, but a framework for arriving at good ethical choices.
 Never a substitute for sound judgment because code of ethics is not a legal document. One can’t be arrested for violating its provisions, although expulsion from the professional society might result from code violations.
 Doesn’t create new moral or ethical principles, rather, it spells out the ways in which moral and ethical principles apply to professional practice. The code helps the engineer to apply moral principles to the unique situations encountered in professional practice. Note Professional engineers are governed bylaw and have generally consistent codes of professional ethics. Working as engineers in industry are also governed by various laws including whistle blowing, product liability laws and often relies on principles of business ethics rather than engineering ethics.
