Directory of Federal Historical Programs and Activities Society for History in the Federal Government Washington, DC Online edition (Feb. 2012) www.shfg.org Based on the 2003 edition published with the assistance of The American Historical Association Please e-mail all corrections and additions to webmaster@shfg.org ______________________________ Preface to the 2003 edition This is the seventh revised edition of a directory that appeared for the first time in print in 1981. Like its predecessors, this edition is a cooperative publishing venture. Members of the Society for History in the Federal Government compiled the directory data. The staff of the American Historical Association arranged for its composition, printing, and marketing. Both organizations hope that their efforts will lead to enhanced appreciation of the breadth and depth of federal historical activities. Each entry in the directory introduces a program or activity. The entry opens with the name of the program and its mailing address. It continues with the name of the program director and a brief description of the program. The entry ends with a Contact Information section that includes a Point of Contact, Telephone Number, Fax Number, E-Mail Address, and Website Address. All of the information is current as of December 2002. The entries are organized in five sections: Programs and Activities in the Executive Branch, Programs and Activities in the Judicial Branch, Programs and Activities in the Legislative Branch, Federal Historical Resources, and Documentary Projects Related to Federal History. Several indexes provide access to the entries: an index of organizational names, an index of personal names, and an index to geographic location. A formidable data compilation task was made much easier by the involvement of several willing volunteers. These included Megaera Ausman, Charlene Bickford, James Byers, Teri Hedgpeth, David Hogan, Suzanne Junod, Matt Richardson, Kevin Ruffher, and Brien Williams. Sharon Thibodeau coordinated the volunteers’ work and edited the final product. This edition of the directory reflects their tireless pursuit of complete and current information, creative innovations, and significant additions. The directory lists hundreds of historical programs and activities and is a clear indication of the vitality of federal history. The Society for History in the Federal Government is happy to play a role in affirming the importance of maintaining a historical perspective in government activity.
