A Fish and Wildlife Management Plan for SVDA has been developed to preserve and improve wildlife habitats. The plan focuses on managing several wildlife species, including American bald eagle, great blue heron, American egret, white‑tailed deer, beaver, and wood duck. Management procedures are concerned with preserving the habitats of the American bald eagle, great blue heron, American egret, and wood duck populations and controlling the buildup of the white‑tailed deer and beaver populations. The installation also takes measures to protect the pileated woodpecker (SVDA 1986b). A great blue heron/great egret rookery is active on the installation (Speaker 1996). A wildlife management area has been established in the northern end of the installation where grazing is excluded and wildlife plantings have been maintained (Dames & Moore 1994a).
