KINSEY PHOTOGRAPHER A half century of negatives by Darius and Tabitha May Kinsey With contributions by son and daughter Darius, Jr., and Dorothea. San Francisco: Scrimshaw, 1975. Limited Edition. Book. 1st edition, ltd to 2,500 sets. Large 4to cloth in two volumes (bound in two different colors of cloth), with a different photo plate on each front cover. 157pp + 162pp. Stunningly illustrated with many, many Kinsey photographs of the Pacific Northwest. Many are full page. All are of the highest quality. There is some other illustrative material (Vol. Two has one brilliant color plate from the original tinted by Mrs. Kinsey). Volume One: "The Family Album & Other Early Work." Volume Two: "The Magnificent Years". As the introductory material says, the Kinseys "spent most of a lifetime in photography" in the logging areas of Washington State beginning about 1900. The photos published here were selected from 4,500 surviving glass plates & film. The set includes well-written essays and just enough descriptive text to allow the photos to command most of the attention, as they should. An "as new" set, and in mint condition in lovely marbled slipcase, and with the slightly soiled mailing box. Published without dust jackets. In spite of the somewhat large number of published copies of this ltd edition, it is a very scarce & desirable set, indeed. (#SHEL527) $263.25

Carmack" standing regally next to a tree & several nuggets of gold, all of which is overarched by a dogsled pulling "Klondike News" & giving the dollar output for 1898. Very nice masthead over a view of Dawson. One long tear in cover repaired; some wear/light chipping to edges. Paper is in very good condition. The original is rare; the reprint is very scarce. n.d. 1827. Klondike. KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH. - BRIMSTON ROAD HOUSE. n.p., 1898. Photographic Image. Not a book. Large 7" x 13 1/2" original print, a bromide emulsion. ca 1898. This road house was originally owned by George Brimston, who also had a claim close by. Yukon Places and Names by Coutts says, "Brims tone Gulch 63 Degrees 43' N 138 Degrees 41' W. flows into Sulphur Creek in the south Klondike district. This short creek was staked and named in late 1897 by George Brimston. The name was a play on hi s own and that of Sulphur Creek. By November 1898 he was working his claim and had built and was operating roadhouse at the mouth of this stream. He worked the stream for a number of years before movi ng to Dawson." One website authority has the hotel operating just in 1898. In 1902 Brimston ran for City Council of Dawson & lost. In 1924 his ten year old son drowned in the Klondike River. The photo shows the front of the roadhouse with an unhitched, loaded wagon near one end with two men standing beside it. Seated or standing around the front door of the house are six men & two women. Peering out of windows above are two men, one holding an open book. Large cloth sign above the front door & window clearly reads in smaller to larger lettering, "BRIMSTON ROAD HOUSE STORE LIQUORS WINES CIGARS J. BRANDMEIR PRO. (A cursory search pulls up no information on J. Brandmeir, the proprietor, from that period or region.). Two readable tall advertising pictorial broadsides or posters on the front of the building refer to McLennans Store in Dawson (street address given) where skirts & petticoats are for sale (drawing of woman in skirt from waist down). The other broadside says "37 miles to McLennans & oddly depicts a black man standing on a short tree stump looking down at a rooster. The photo was placed by a previous owner in a modern frame & mat, & was mounted on foam board. Undoubtedly the photo was previously rolled up, because along the bottom edge are seven vertical pressure ridges resulting in slight cracking (not tears) of the print. They are as short as 3/8" & as long as 1 1/4". Honestly, they detract very little from the appearance of the image, but obviously would be of concern to collectors of prints in fine, original condition only. This is a crisp, sharply focused, wonderful photo from one of the great gold rushes of North America. No photographer is named. I find no copies of the Brimston Road House in my small library of Klondike photo books, & the Dawson Museum has no photo of it. Undoubtedly rare & possibly unique. ca 1898 (#0211090) $328.05

Illustrated with photo portrait reproductions & simple Texas maps with the appropriate data for each subject inked in the original & reproduced in its appropriate part of the book. The San Antonio author was a history professor at Trinity University. He says in his Intro, "I learned to hate history in an elementary classroom in East Texas, where I alternately drowsed and occasionally listened to a teacher drone on..." Later, in college, "I settled into the library and began to read. ... I learned something amazing. History was made up of people. ... I got swept away by the people, and eventually, the dates and events began to fall into place." When he began to teach, he began to introduce students to the "colorful individuals... who made Texas into what it now is." "The fifteen Texans included in this volume were non-conformists willing to flout the traditional norms of their day..." Kownslar has selected various sources for his biographical treatment of the following Texans: David Crockett, Lorenzo de Zavala, Pamela Mann, "Bigfoot" Wallace, Sam Houston, Elisabet (sic?) Ney, Elizabeth Johnson, William Brann, "Dad" Joiner, Maury Maverick, Sr., Walter Prescott Webb, J.
