Laid into this copy is a short, but wonderful T.L.S. (typed letter signed) by Croy on a small-sized printed letterhead, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth (England). It has his corrections in ink, but reads: "April 23rd - Friend: I'm going to pull down, just as Jesse would have done, on the person who said the book was unobtainable. I'm telling the publishers to write you. I've (sic) extremely thankful the book has done so well. I was afraid a book about an outlaw would not go, but it has. Yours till General MacArthur Loves Truman. H. C." Also laid in is a small news clipping of the death of 109 year old James Russell Davis, who testified that as a member of the James gang he could identify J. Frank Dalton as Jesse James. Croy grew up close by the James family. "It seems to me I have always known the James Story." He interviewed many interesting people for this book. Fine copy in dj with several chips. Only one illustration as this volume was intended to reproduce text. However, the illustration is the frontispiece, the famous Curtis self-portrait, of which a collector's magazine recently said, "Edward Curtis' self portrait is now considered one of the most important photographs of the twentieth century." A recent print at auction sold for 9K. Classic Gravure intended to reprint the entire Curtis work using original plates & "the finest of craftsmanship", but the company went out of business & this was the only volume produced. Editor's Note: "This text has been abridged from (Vols) I, II, XII, XVI, and XVII... The intention of this volume is to give a condensed account of the ways of life of the Southwestern Indians." Therefore, material on: Apache, Jicarillas, Navaho, Pima, Papago, Qahatika, Mohave, Yuma, Maricopa, Walapai, Havasupai, Apache-Mohave or Yavapai, Hopi, Tiwa, Keres, Zuni. "Most modern books on Curtis have little of his text. This is the exception" (Roth). Laid into this copy is a folded, complete, Nov. 2, 1881 Nashville newspaper, The Daily American, containing an article on Jesse's killing of Ed Miller. A preliminary blank page has a faint, but half-legible pencil ownership inscription: "William H. ? His Book. 1880, (etc.)," This important book is a very good copy from the Jerome Peltier collection, with a small amount of foxing, some occasional smudging, & occasional previously dog-eared page corner now smoothly re-pressed.
