LIFE IN THE FAR WEST. NY: Harper & Bros, 1849. First Thus. Book. Blind-stamped decorative cloth. 235pp + 4pp ads. Signature of owner, Robert A. Bacon, three times, twice in pencil (ffep & t.p.) & once in ink (t.p.). Also ink stamp of Frederick Thompson, Mill Valley, on front paste down. This title is a classic of the frontier, & was republished in facsimile years ago in the Time-Life Classics series. An internet search leads to the Thompson family of Mill Valley & the Bank of America. Good. Howes 554. (#1011134) $93.20

Gilt-stamped & decorative blind-stamped original cloth with title in gilt on spine, & also blind-stamped "New Adventure Library" on spine. 363pp. Illustrated with several well-executed woodcuts, mainly of classic, noble-appearing Indians after Bodmer and/or Catlin, but also of Western animals. A.) contemporary with the time of publication, most likely, has written a nearly full page note in ink (fine penmanship), to the effect that it is not alright to "leave thumb marks on the pages of this book, nor to turn down the corners of the leaves." A few pages later, the same penman has neatly written on the blank recto of an illustration the following: "The man who borrows a book and reads it through without turning down the corners of the leaves or leaving the prints of his thumbs is a gentleman and a scholar, and a good judge of whiskey." On the lower part of the t-p is the small, slightly decorative oval ink stamp of the "Omaha Weekly Bee -- Premium."
