THE PUPIL'S GUIDE on A NEW PLAN combining SPELLING AND READING; and CONTAINING AN EXTENSIVE VARIETY of MENTAL EXERCISES: with an appendix of ORTHOGRAPHY (as it should be). Cincinnati: Huntington and Savage, 1850. 2nd Edition. Book. 12mo pictorial paper over boards. 160pp + 8pp ("Appendix". Komstok's Inglic Alfabet) ('n' in Inglic is reversed). Illustrated with vignettes. Several music scores. A rare book, with only two (2) copies of this 1850 edition shows up in world libraries. A library search records a 1st edition, 1849, but no copies appear in world libraries. We suspect that the citation for it comes from this 2nd edition where, on the verso of the title page, the 1949 edition was noted as being registered & published by Baker & Scribner. Our research shows that Webb (1824 - 1887) had 45 works in print in 90 publications, with his specialty being teaching children how to read -- literacy building. This copy worn with some loss of the cover paper on the edges, especially the back cover. Boards worn at fore corners. Binding is reasonably tight. The serious collector or research library will probably desire to do some restoration & possibly rebinding, retaining these original covers. (#lynn076b) $131.22
