1769. Klondike. KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH. - BRIMSTON ROAD HOUSE. n.p., 1898. Photographic Image. Not a book. Large 7" x 13 1/2" original print, a bromide emulsion. ca 1898. This road house was originally owned by George Brimston, who also had a claim close by. Yukon Places and Names by Coutts says, "Brims tone Gulch 63 Degrees 43' N 138 Degrees 41' W. flows into Sulphur Creek in the south Klondike district. This short creek was staked and named in late 1897 by George Brimston. The name was a play on hi s own and that of Sulphur Creek. By November 1898 he was working his claim and had built and was operating roadhouse at the mouth of this stream. He worked the stream for a number of years before movi ng to Dawson." One website authority has the hotel operating just in 1898. In 1902 Brimston ran for City Council of Dawson & lost. In 1924 his ten year old son drowned in the Klondike River. The photo shows the front of the roadhouse with an unhitched, loaded wagon near one end with two men standing beside it. Seated or standing around the front door of the house are six men & two women. Peering out of windows above are two men, one holding an open book. Large cloth sign above the front door & window clearly reads in smaller to larger lettering, "BRIMSTON ROAD HOUSE STORE LIQUORS WINES CIGARS J. BRANDMEIR PRO. (A cursory search pulls up no information on J. Brandmeir, the proprietor, from that period or region.). Two readable tall advertising pictorial broadsides or posters on the front of the building refer to McLennans Store in Dawson (street address given) where skirts & petticoats are for sale (drawing of woman in skirt from waist down). The other broadside says "37 miles to McLennans & oddly depicts a black man standing on a short tree stump looking down at a rooster. The photo was placed by a previous owner in a modern frame & mat, & was mounted on foam board. Undoubtedly the photo was previously rolled up, because along the bottom edge are seven vertical pressure ridges resulting in slight cracking (not tears) of the print. They are as short as 3/8" & as long as 1 1/4". Honestly, they detract very little from the appearance of the image, but obviously would be of concern to collectors of prints in fine, original condition only. This is a crisp, sharply focused, wonderful photo from one of the great gold rushes of North America. No photographer is named. I find no copies of the Brimston Road House in my small library of Klondike photo books, & the Dawson Museum has no photo of it. Undoubtedly rare & possibly unique. ca 1898 Good. Paperback. (#0211090) $328.05
