Fos/address from Saint John, N. B., on ffep. A rather common municipal history, except that this copy has written on the rear blank pages (2 pp.) forty (40) signatures nearly filling the two pages. They are signatures of all kinds of folks: some from Moncton Business Assoc.; some from "Halifax (Glencoe C.C.)", and others. It doesn't take long to figure out that this were signatures of curling club members, presumably gathered together for some sort of event. For example, several "M.C.A." signatures (Moncton Curling Club?); "Shirley W___, 1st Stone Runner Up"; "Mary ____ 2nd Stone CCC March/68". "Hazel H____ - Bathurst Curling Club '68". etc.. Frontispiece art portrait of Thayendanagea (Joseph Brant). Presentation copy from "the author" to Rev'd R. J. Roberts, in Toronto in March 1899. The date is repeated in ink with (device) 13 (device) 1899. Please note that MacKenzie doesn't write his name, but writes, "With the best wishes of the author". The author's "frequent and extended visits" gave him "intimate knowledge" of the "six independent tribes of the Mohawks, Tuscaroras, Onondagas, Senecas, Oneidas, and Cayugas..." On the front cover are two circular stains that overlap the gilt image. They are not strong stains, but they are present. A few other spots on the covers. A collectable copy nevertheless. The poet & editor of several journals & magazines, among them Briarcliff Quarterly, Chronos, Pembroke Magazine, was at the Univ. of Oklahoma at the time of the publication of this title. 1989. Maddox, Gov. Lester. LETTER. Atlanta, 1971. Letter. Not a book. Original T.L.S. (typed letter, signed) from Georgia Governor Lester Maddox to a bookseller in Spokane, WA. Dated Jan. 12, 1971, Maddox responds to a query following Maddox's appearance on the Dick Cavett Show (12/18/1970). After promises from the show that it would be "fair and honest", Maddox walked off the show because "I simply can't stand hypocrisy, dishonesty and deceit." (the subject was segregation). "I will not hesitate to expose those who live by such standards, whether they be in government, education, religion, the new media or elsewhere." He compliments the inquirer & assures him that "I will continue to try to do more for my country which has done so much for me." According to internet information, a few nights later Maddox returned to the show. After selling fried chicken, Maddox served as Gov. of GA 1967-71, & his obituary (d. 2003) described him as "one of the civil rights era's most unusual characters." This great anniversary catalogue of the famed Maggs Brothers of London would be a shining gem in the library of any collector who loves "the art of the book." A few items pertain to the Western Hemisphere. Documents & books offered for sale begin in the mid 1400s & go up to the early 20th Century, with most appearing to be from the 16th & 17th Centuries. For sale were widely diverse rarities such as Napoleon's Bibles, an autograph letter from Martin Luther, seven autograph letters from Robert Lewis Stevenson, Zarate's 1581 The History and Conquest of Peru, the 1555 Relacion of Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, Sagard's 1636 Histoire du Canada, and the 1508 Vespucci Itinerarium (the first Latin translation of his voyages). Condition: about 2 1/2" of the heavy paper binding at the top of the spine was torn & has been reglued. It looks wrinkled & the tears are still apparent, but otherwise a fine copy. Good+. Paperback. 1994. Maier, Walter A. (Jr.). JUSTIFICATION BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH. Ft. Wayne: Privately Printed, 1982. First Edition. Book. Printed 4to wraps. 67pp + 10pp. Dr. Maier, son of the famed Lutheran Hour Speaker (Sr.), was profession of exegetical theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne. In the early 80s many accused him of a failure of orthodoxy with respect to his understanding and teaching of this central Biblical & Reformation / Lutheran doctrine. A controversy ensued, including a caution by then Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) President Jacob Preus against reelecting Dr. Maier as Synod vice-president. Seminary President Robert Preus was intimately involved in this controversy, also. It was eventually resolved in Dr. Maier's favor. This book is Dr. Maier's essay clarifying his position & teaching. The first three pages are "A Letter To The Pastors Of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod" originating from Federal Way, Washington, the five singes in support of Dr. Maier & his essay. Your bookseller has laid in a lengthy 5 1/2 page report, a Spring 1981 "President's Message" by Ft. Wayne president Robert Preus, giving a lengthy summary & update of the situation. This documents are important in a study of Missouri Synod Lutheranism of the period, and the essay expresses a thorough & scholarly Lutheran presentation of the central Christian doctrine described in the title.
