2351. Musick, L. W. THE HERMIT OF SISKIYOU - or - Twice-Old Man. Crescent City: Crescent City News, 1896. First Edition. Book. Gilt-stamped 12mo gray cloth (small book, 3 3/4" x 6 1/4"). 81pp. Lynwood Carranco wrote of the Crescent City & Northern California area nearby, "This rugged country was among the last regions in the United States to be explored. Humboldt Bay was not explored until the end of 1848 - when San Francisco, less than 300 miles to the south, was already a city of 20,000.Three popular legends that originated in this area and are popularly believed to have a historical base are the following: (1) The Kings Peak Legend, (2) The Lost Cabin Legend, and (3) The Bigfoot Legend." Musick's book is a combination of lengthy poetic description of these "legends" & accompanying prose commentary. This book is said to be the very first to specifically mention in book format a sighting of what we now call Bigfoot or Sasquatch, namely the newspaper report of a sighting originally published in 1886 in the Del Nort (sic) Record. It is short, but vivid. On an adjacent page is a report of eighteen missing miners in the French Hill area near Crescent City. A matter of debate & discomfort among many is the linking of some missing people through the years (including these miners) and Sasquatch. This copy professionally rebound in its original covers by my long-time fine book binder. The brittle endpapers were replaced with appropriate & genuine antique papers representing the same period. A rare book, seldom offered for sale. Cowan p449. Very Good+. Hardcover. (#1204096) $800.40
