5.3 Student Honor Code5.3.1 Honor CodeThe Honor Code challenges students to fulfill their responsibilities to themselves as God’s children and to each other, as brothers and sisters, to live lives marked by truth and integrity, not by lying, cheating or stealing. The administration presents this challenge during the opening chapel each year. The Honor Code is adapted from Ephesians 4:25, 28, 29; it reads With God’s almighty help, I will put away falsehood and speak the truth with my neighbor, for we are members one of another. I will not steal, but rather labor, doing honest work with my own hands, so that I may have something to share with anyone in need. The talk that comes out of my mouth will be good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. When a student breaks his word as given in the Honor Code, he should speak to any affected individuals, whether teachers or students. When students observe another student speaking or acting contrary to God’s truth or love, they should check their own attitudes first and then seek to restore their brother or sister gently. Following the principles of Matthew 18, if a student refuses to listen to the correction of his fellow students, they should bring his case to the Honor Council. 5.3.2 Honor CouncilThe Honor Council hears cases of violations of the Honor Code. When they understand a student to have acted or spoken contrary to God’s truth or love, they admonish him or her to put off his old self, be renewed in the spirit of his mind and put on the new self, truly righteous and holy. If a student refuses to listen to the Honor Council’s correction, they may choose to inform the student’s parents. However, the Honor Council will neither refer the case to the administration nor share information with them. If the case involves activity more serious than lying, cheating or stealing, the Honor Council is to connect the student to a godly Christian adult who may help him or her best. The Honor Council comprises the Head Prefect, the Academic Prefect and the Discipleship Prefect. Exemplary students are appointed to these roles each year with much prayer and consideration by the Academy Principal, the Discipleship Director, and other advisors to Student Leadership. 5.4 Guiding Student Conduct5.4.1 RespectStudents must always respect one another’s rights and property and the authority of adults and student leaders. Behavior which the teacher deems to be chronic, flagrant, or otherwise worthy of special handling will be referred to the administration. Such behavior will result in disciplinary action. Recurrent problems at this level which evidence a lack of concern for improvement or spiritual growth will lead to suspension or expulsion. 5.4.2 After-School SupervisionStudents who find it necessary to remain after school must be under appropriate adult supervision. 5.4.3 TalkingTalking is to be done in conversational tones. Students are not to whistle, yell, or be rowdy in any building or hallway. Students should listen when others are speaking and raise their hands to request permission to speak. When talking is permitted, the class must not become loud or boisterous. 5.4.4 Class PreparationStudents are expected to enter the classroom quietly, sharpen pencils, and take their seats before the class starts. 5.4.5 Unauthorized ArticlesUnauthorized articles are not allowed in school without specific teacher permission. These items include cell phones, iPods, and other electronic devices. Also included in this list are any items that distract from the learning environment. Such articles will be confiscated. They will be returned to parents or destroyed at the discretion of the principal. 5.4.6 Class AssignmentsClass assignments are to be turned in promptly the period that they are due or a “zero” will be issued. At a time designated by the teacher, “zeros” will not be allowed to be made-up. Students may not work on another class’s assignment unless permitted by the teacher of the class they are attending. 5.4.7 Chewing GumStudents should not have chewing gum on school property unless authorized by a coach to students participating in a school-sponsored athletic activity. 5.4.8 StewardshipBasic to God's law of love is that we respect the resources God has given to us in steward ship. Damaging or wasting resources (e.g., property, time, talents) is contrary to God's law of love. If behavior reflects poor steward ship, it should be corrected. Everyone should help keep our school clean by placing trash in the receptacles and by picking up trash on the grounds and in the classrooms. Trash should not be left in desks, and lockers should be kept neat. Students who maliciously destroy school property are subject to suspension or expulsion from school and will be expected to repair such property and/or make appropriate multiple restitution. 5.4.9 Physical ContactStudents should generally keep their hands to themselves. Boys and girls are not to engage in public displays of affection (hanging on to each other, holding hands, sitting on laps, hugging, kissing, etc.). In the light of God’s Word (1 Thess 4:3, 1 Cor 6:18) it shall be the policy of RBCA, whenever there is clear evidence of willing participation in sexual immorality (such as pre-marital sexual activity, unwed pregnancy, or homosexuality) to expel the participant(s) immediately. 5.4.10 Hall PassesDuring class or study hall, students must have a hall pass to go to another room or the office. The student’s class planner with a teacher’s dated signature will serve as their hall pass. 5.5 Dress CodeThe Academy Dress Code for AY 2013-2014 is found in Appendix A. The dress code is monitored by designated administrative personnel. Students who do not adhere to the Academy Dress Code will receive appropriate consequences.
