MOSCOW, February 3 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store will discuss in Moscow on Wednesday economic partnership and prospects for the expansion of the cross border cooperation.

The sides intend to touch upon the issue of delimitation in the Barents Sea. Lavrov stressed that the “negotiating process is going on progressively.” “A small part of the delimitations has already been coordinated, signed and approved by the governments,” he explained. “This has laid down important principles that will be applied in the settlement of the remaining part of delimitations. The Russian and Norwegian sides are content with the progress of the negotiating process,” he said.

Gahr Store also positively assessed the bilateral relations with Russia. “Relations between Norway and Russia are developing pragmatically and progressively,” he noted. “They have considerably advanced, in particular, in the fishing sphere,” the minister added. Touching upon the cross border cooperation Store noted that about 40 Norwegian companies are working in Murmansk alone, as just 15 years ago there was not a single one.

BarentsObserver: Putin: -Norwegians are very reliable partners

Meeting with LUKoil's top boss this week, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the Norwegians are very reliable partners.

Last week, Norwegian oil major Statoil and Russia’s largest oil company LUKoil signed an joint agreement to develop the West Qurna 2 oil field in the Basra province in Iraq.

In a meeting on Monday this week, LUKoil’s President Vagit Alekperov discussed the project with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

At the meeting Putin said: - Your partners are very reliable too. We are working closely with the Norwegians on many projects, including the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea, which is another joint project involving a Russian company that offers good prospects for resolving issues in northern Europe. We are still negotiating a number of provisions, and this project gives us another impetus for settling current problems.

A transcript from the meeting is posted on the Prime Minister’s web-portal.

LUKoil is the largest Russian oil business group with annual turnover of over US$107 billion and net income of over US$9.1 billion. Statoil is Norway's oil major and partner with French Total and Russia's Gazprom in the Shtokman Development Group.

Itar-Tass: US says membership of SCO not ruled out in future

WASHINGTON, February 3 (Itar-Tass) - U.S. is not seeking membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization at the moment but it does not rule out an opportunity of this kind in the future, Robert Blake, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia said Tuesday in an interview with Itar-Tass.

He recalled that the U.S. has sent its representatives for holding dialogue with the SCO in the past and although Washington does not seek the organization’s membership at the moment, an interest towards this might emerge in the future.

Blake made it quite clear, however, that none of the SCO members have made any invitations to Washington to join in so far.
