MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Textile

The Kadangyan burial cloth is a popular kind of textile in Mountain Province. It is a status symbol for the wealthy families in this area. During the early times, only the female elders are allowed to weave such clothing. The fabrics used by the men as G-strings are called in their locality as wanes. The women use a fabric called getap as their wrap-around skirt and wear a type of belt known as ginaspala wanes. This belt is worn by married women of Bontoc, and Kankanay is composed of unbroken zigzag patterns woven in double laced motif with braided warps that end as tassels. The natives of Bontoc create their textile patterns through the ikat, a weaving method. It is a process of tying and dyeing the threads to prepare the patterns before they are woven into textiles.
