Park and Other Trips

Dismals Canyon, Phil Campbell, Alabama (74 miles)

Over time the force of draining waters helped to carve a canyon and gorge system punctuated throughout by dozens of sandstone-sheltered grottos, two waterfalls, six natural bridges, and giant moss covered boulders. This natural wonder contains one of the oldest primeval forests east of the Mississippi River untouched by ax or fire that is open to the public. "Temple Cave" - a bluff shelter on the canyon floor - was home to a tribe of Paleo Indians about 10,000 years ago.

Walls of Jericho, Scottsboro Alabama (76 miles)

Since his family owned land here, Davy Crockett explored the area in the late 1700s. A minister came upon the Walls of Jericho in the late 1800s and was so captivated by the cathedral-like beauty that he declared it needed a biblical name and the name stuck. You can travel to the bottom of its 50-yard-wide limestone bowl and look up at 200-foot-tall cliffs on each side. In a heavy rain, water shoots out of holes and cracks in the rock.

Little River Canyon, Fort Payne, Alabama (80 miles)

The Little River Canyon is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the East — a hike along the rim reveals drops of 500 to 600 feet from the bluffs to the canyon floor.46

Oak Mountain Park, Pelham Alabama (111 miles)

The Wildlife Center http://www.awrc.org/ is located in Oak Mountain Park. It is the largest wildlife rehabilitation center in Alabama and cares for over 2,000 injured and orphaned wild creatures each year. Visitors may view the rehabilitation process through one-way glass and learn about native species. Oak Mountain is also home to the Vulcan Orienteering Club. Visit their website http://home.earthlink.net/~ciza/voc.html for orienteering maps including: Oak Mountain and Monte Sano State Park.

Grooverville, Pulaski, Tennessee (56 miles)

Perform skill building activities, built a rope bridge, and shoot shotguns on the Groover’s farm.

Ocmulgee National Monument, Macon, Georgia (279 miles)

From Ice-Age hunters to the Creeks of historic times, there is evidence here of 10,000 years of human habitation. Ocmulgee National Monument preserves and displays a collection of archeological artifacts dating back more than 12,000 years. From early Clovis points through colonial bells and a 300 year old sword, the collection demonstrates our historic connection to all cultures from Stone Age to Space Age.47

Stafford Beach, Cumberland Island, Georgia (298 miles)

Rated one of the 10 best campsites in the Unites States. This 36,415-acre national seashore allows only 60 people at a time in its four backcountry campgrounds, which means Stafford, three miles from the ferry dock, is never crowded.48

Big Cypress National Preserve, Ochopee, FL (839 miles)

The section of the Florida Trail in Big Cypress is virtually flat for its entire length and, depending on the season, is mostly underwater up to three feet deep. There is no potable water along the 31-mile section of trail and there are only two primitive campsites, but it's a great way to see the exciting ecosystem of Big Cypress up close. A word of caution: The preserve is home to many species of poisonous snake.49

Rifle and Shotgun Shooting Trips

Summary: The Madison County Shooting Sports Association is integrated with Boy Scouts. If between 6-12 boys sign up for shot gun and/or rifle shooting merit badges, Mr. Poniatowski will come to our Troop meeting and give a class on the non-shooting portion of the merit badges. The shooting portion of these merit badges requires skill, and can be completed at the range at Sharon Johnston Park.
