South Australia – The Leader in Communications

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, Melbourne scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Victorians, in the weeks that followed, a Sydney archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the Sydney Morning Herald read: "New South Wales archaeologists, finding traces of 130-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 30 years earlier than the Victorians".

One week later The Advertiser reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Gawler, South Australia, John Brown, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. John has therefore concluded that 150 years ago,

South Australia had already gone wireless.."

The Engineering Profession, at the Forefront of Technology and Fashion

Fashion Engineering

Dr Janet Cooke Hansen is President and Chief Fashion Engineer of Enlighted Designs, Inc. She founded the business to create her own "dream job" as a light-up clothing designer.

Janet's eclectic designs combine her lifelong interests of fashion, art, and technology. She learned to sew at age 7, and installed miniature lights in her own dollhouse. Over the years, her costume-making hobby began to incorporate electronics, with illuminating results.

Do you need to be a rocket scientist to design clothes like this? Probably not, but it doesn't hurt, either. Janet’s formal education includes the following.

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences/Bioengineering

  • M.S. in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences/Bioengineering,

  • B.S. in Engineering. Graduated with High Distinction, Honours in Engineering.

And, of course, Fashion Hackers

I’m interested in learning about the intersection between the hacker community and the tech/fashion DIY community. Taking gadgets apart, and stitching them back into garments is the basis for wearable technology; this seems to parallel what hackers do in that they also take things apart, and use them in a different way from their intended purpose.

Alison Lewis is a designer with a passion for fashion, beauty and the digital lifestyle. She holds a graduate degree from Parsons School of Design where she teaches fashion technology and fashion communication. As the electronic and media specialist at Art Guild Inc., she integrates movement, sound, and light into museum and exhibit design. In her spare time, when Alison isn’t exploring New York City boutiques, she is the techno-fashionista guru for Verizon FiOS’s television show MyHome2.0.
