car door-OO).
The compound verbs are stressed on the second word in compound.
- For example: outsmart(oO),overdue(ooO);
In the compound adjectives both parts are stressed. Stronger stress usually falls on the second component of two-word compound adjectives.
- For example: Dark-green(oO),Light-brown(oO), good-looking(oOo),snow-white(oO).

Sometimes a compound word looks the same as:
- a normal adjective and noun
- a normal noun and verb
- But the pronunciation is different!
Stress in longer words (1st part) We can build longer words by adding parts to the beginning or end of shorter words. Usually this doesn’t change the stress: it stays on the same syllable as in the original word. |

The list of beginnings and endings that don’t change the stress of the shorter words
-able(drinkable)
-al(musical)
-er(player)
-ful(helpful)
-hood(childhood)
-ing(boring)
-in/I’m(impossible)
-ise(civilise)
-ish(childish)
-less(childless)
-ly(friendly)
-ment(employment)
-ness(happiness)
-ship(friendship)
un-(unhappy)
under-(underpay)
HOWEVER,some endings do change the stress in the shorter word
- For example, look how ending –ion change the stress in the word isolate and meditate:
When we add the endings –ion or –ian the stress always moves to the syllable before these endings. Here I’m going to show more examples:
e

lec

The ending –ic also moves the stress( as endings –ion/-ian) to the syllable before it. Here, you can see some examples.
- scientist
- economy
- artist
- atom
scientific
economic
artistic
atomic
Let’s see another example!
The ending –al does not change the stress of the word,so,for example, the stress is on the same syllable in these two words:
- economic-economical
- politic-political
- statistic-statistical
- optimistic-optimistical
Stress in longer words (2nd part) There are many longer word endings where the last letter is –y. And in words with these ending, the stress is placed on the syllable two from the end. Let’s see some examples: - public-publicity
- national-nationality
- person-personality
- chemist-chemistry
If we add the ending –ic to a word, the stress goes on the syllable before –ic. You can notice the change of stress, for example: - photograph-photographic
REMEMBER! In words for experts in any spheres/subjects,such as photographer or climotologist, the stress stays on the same syllable as in the word ending in –y
- photography-photographer
- climatology-climatologist
Many words for school and university subjects(the name of them) have one of the –y endings(what was mentioned previously) or the ending –ics. Let’s see some examples.
- Unfortunately,I’m bad at physics,chemistry and biology.
- I wasn’t good at mathematics before courses.
- Marta would like to study history, geology and geography.
- She refused to attend economics courses.
- In the future John will study philosophy.
Thank you for attention:))
