TODAY'S FOCUS

SPECIAL HOLIDAY WEEKEND EDITION

Army-Navy Football Game

In what has been named one of the top sports rivalries in the nation, the United States Military Academy Black Knights will face off against the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen on December 3rd, at Lincoln-Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.

Those who were unable to get coveted seats to the game can watch it live on CBS at 2:30 p.m.

GAME HISTORY

* The first Army-Navy Football game was played in 1890
Over the past 115 years, Army and Navy have faced off every year except for 10. It was canceled once due to the death of a Cadet football player during a game against Harvard; twice during World War I on order of the War Department; twice when the schools could not agree on player eligibility; and for four years between 1894 and 1898 when the Navy win nearly sparked a duel between a Brigadier General and a Rear Admiral.

* In the history of the rivalry, Army has won 49 times, Navy has won 49 times and the game was tied seven times.

Since the inception of the annual game, Navy has outscored Army 1,471 to 1,322, a difference of 15 touchdowns between the teams.

* Navy has beaten Army in the last three consecutive meetings.

COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF TROPHY

* The Commander-in-Chief Trophy is presented by the President of the United States to the service academy that has the best record against the others at the end of the season.

* The trophy has been awarded to Air Force 16 times, Navy seven times and Army six times.

Right now, Army is 1-0, Navy is 1-0 and Air Force is 0-2. The winner of the Army-Navy game will be the winner of the Commander-in-Chief Trophy. The Army has not won the trophy since 1996.

* The trophy is 2.5 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds.

SENIOR LEADERS ARE SAYING

The Soldiers who make up this quality force are highly-skilled, intelligent, but most of all, dedicated. Our nation must remain as dedicated to them as they are to the nation.
(Schoomaker: Army must fight in 4 quadrants )

Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker
Chief of Staff, United States Army

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

Holiday Message: Remember deployed troops

As we celebrate this holiday season, we should also celebrate the spirit of the American Soldier.

For more than 230 years, this spirit led America's men and women to courageously answer the call to duty and help preserve liberty throughout the world. Today, this same noble spirit inspires our Soldiers as they simultaneously fight the war on terror and transform the Army to meet future challenges.

This holiday season should also be a time of remembrance. We should remember our Soldiers deployed in 120 countries around the world. Likewise, we should keep in our hearts our family members while their loved ones are far from home. And of course, we will always remember our Soldiers who never returned from the fight and their families.

May you all have a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season. May God bless the men and women in our Army. And may God bless our wonderful country.

Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Kenneth Preston
