Sharron Davies MBE

Former Swimming Champion
Sharron Davies remains one of Britain's most recognisable sporting women. In an age of increasingly fleeting fame and notoriety, she has been one of the UK’s best known and most popular women. Astonishingly, she first represented Great Britain as an 11-year-old swimmer and was selected for the 1976 Montreal Olympics where as a 13 year old Olympian instantly became a household name and has lived her life in the public eye ever since. More than 30 years later she is still as popular, in demand and a much admired character.
An extraordinary swimming career saw medals in all major championships and a staggering 200+ national and international records, some of which stood for over a decade. But it was in 1978 that 15-year-old Sharron stormed to the first of her many successes as a double Commonwealth Gold Medallist for both the 200 and 400m Individual Medley events.
As is often the case with prodigies whose success and stardom arrives so early, Sharron decided she needed a break from training and competition and ‘retired’ at the age of 18 to pursue a media career. However the lure of the water proved too much and she returned in 1989 and promptly regained her national 200m title.
Twice voted British Press Sportswoman of the Year, Sharron’s incredible international career spanned three decades, included numerous major titles and medals, 200 British records, some of which stand to this day (including the 20- year-old 400 IM record), 5 World Masters records and an MBE awarded by the Queen for services to sport.
Retiring from competition in 1994 Sharron has become a regular on television and in the press. As a key member of BBC television’s commentating and presenting team she has covered many major events including the Seoul, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics.
A successful high profile media career has spanned over 25 years and encompassed: children's programmes, breakfast TV including a period presenting Channel 4's hugely successful 'Big Breakfast', guest slots on programmes as varied as The Gadget Show, Hale & Pace and French & Saunders and presenting duties on Superstars and six Olympic Games for the BBC so far (experiencing nine as a competitor and broadcaster). Sharron has also regularly featured on the likes of Question of Sport and They Think It's All Over.
Business success and significant charity commitments have also played a major part in Sharron's busy life. Her time on Gladiators as 'Amazon' won her a whole new audience and she remains in continuous demand for TV work, radio broadcasts, newspaper and magazine interviews, photo shoots and personal appearances. She is also a dedicated mother of three.
Sharron has known triumph and adversity in her personal life and in a sporting context and knows what it takes to operate at the highest level, to prioritise, multi-task, overcome obstacles and attain success.
As a sportswoman, television personality, devoted mother of three, public speaker, model, tireless charity worker, powerboat racer, author, interior designer, or equestrian Sharron enjoys remarkable popularity amongst those aged 8 to 80!
Sharron has written several books including an autobiography, fitness and pregnancy guide, a Learn to Swim book (translated into 10 languages) a back care book, a Fit for Life CD-Rom and a fitness video.
