The Chisholm Trail

Entrepreneur Joseph McCoy conjured the idea of an express route through the Native

American country to new rail stations in Abilene, Kansas. In a joint venture with

Railroad companies, he established cattle pens and a new hotel at the rail station.

Surveyors marked a new route back south to Texas, which began due south of Wichita.

This route followed Jesse Chisholm's 220-mile trade road to a trading post north of the Canadian River.  From Jesse's trading post, the trail continued due south into Texas, crossing the Red River. This route was dubbed the Chisholm Trail, an exact corridor from Texas through Indian Territory to Abilene. McCoy distributed handbills throughout southern Texas and encouraged cattlemen to bring their herds to Abilene.

The Wright Brothers

In 1878, Wilbur (1867-1912) and Orville Wright’s (1871-1948) father returned from an expeditions with a toy helicopter made of cork, bamboo, and paper and powered by a rubber band. This helicopter would begin a lifelong effort in the pursuit of human flight. In 1899, Wilbur and Orville developed a model that would later become the world’s first airplane. Inquisitive minds had discovered that flight was possible, as the steam engine could propel objects mid-air, but failed to maintain control in take off, turning, and landing. Determined, the Wright brothers went on to examine the flight of the pigeon and concluded that pigeons maintained control by frequently adjusting their wings. If they could create a machine to simulate this pattern, then control could be established and maintained. In 1901, the inspired brothers built gliders with flexible wings and tested their models in wind tunnels. In 1903, the brothers carried their latest model with a light-weight engine attached to a desolate beach on the outer banks of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It was here on December 17, 1903 where Orville took flight, with Wilbur standing alongside and ascended into history as their first flight travelled 120 feet for 12 seconds. Several more trials would be completed on that same day, the longest spanning 852 feet for 59 seconds.
