Fish populations are affected by three factors:
Mortality rates: Mortality measures the number of fish removed/eliminated from the population.
Growth: Growth refers to the span and gaining weight of the population in each specific period.
Recruitment: Recruitment is the number of fish born in a specific period.
Fish populations rise through recruitment and growth, but mortality from fishing or natural causes diminishes both numbers and biomass. “Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing increases mortality and negatively impacts fish populations in abundance and size.” Fishers commonly target spawning biomass, resulting in high mortality rates and fewer recruits and mega spawners. Small mesh sizes used for illicit fishing might negatively affect fish size distribution and development.

This technique increases the number of overexploited and depleted fish stocks, jeopardizing the long-term viability of ocean resources. As a result, it is vital to distinguish between diverse types of fishing activities and the potential repercussions.
