Systematics is the entire field dealing with
- kind of animals- their distinction- classification- evolution

Blackwelder (1967)
: The study of the kinds and
diversity of organisms, their distinction and evolution’
5

Simpson (1961):
much broader & widely adopted def. as ‘Systematics is the scientific study of the kinds and diversity of organisms and of any and all relationships among them’
Mayr (1969):
emphasized that relationships are to betaken in the broad sense to include all biological relationships among organisms
Simple definition:
‘Systematics is the science of diversity
of organisms’
6

Christoffersen (1995):
‘The theory, principles and practice of identifying discovering) systems, i.e. of ordering the diversity of organisms parts) into more general systems of taxa (wholes) according to the most general casual processes’
7

CLASSIFICATION
Simpson (1961): Classification is the ordering of animals into groups or sets on the basis of their relationships, that is, of associations by contiguity, similarity, or both Blackwelder (1967): It is the arrangement of the individuals into groups (taxa) and the groups into a system in which the data about the kinds determine their position in the system and thereafter reflected by the position
ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE
The application of the distinctive names to each of the
groups recognized in any given zoological classification
8

Classification: the ordering of organisms into groups based on their relationships
alpha taxonomy - the describing and naming of species
beta taxonomy - arranging species into a system of higher classification (genus through Kingdom and Domain)
gamma taxonomy - study of the biological aspects of species, such as intraspecific variation and the actual mechanisms of speciation.
