Alpha taxomomy
– a dead science?
• Nowadays there is little incentive for young scientists to gain training in alpha taxonomy because, although this discipline is fundamental to all other branches of biology, including biodiversity research, funding agencies view it as old fashioned.
• It is thus often difficult for researchers doing primarily alpha taxonomy to obtain research grants and academic positions Alpha taxonomy done in an academic vacuum and for its own sake is probably a thing of the past, and justifiably so Fortunately, it can be done in such away as to simultaneously provide crucial data on ecology, evolution, biodiversity, and biogeography, and it can be integrated with phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies.

Beta taxonomy (β):
The level concerned with the arrangement of species into a natural system of lower and higher taxa.
OR
The classification of species into different taxonomic categories.
OR
The arrangement of the species into a natural system of lower and higher categories.

Gamma (γ):
• The level of taxonomy dealing with various biological aspects of taxa, ranging from the study of intraspecific populations to studies of speciation and evolutionary rates and trends It deals with intraspecific variations and evolutionary studies, so as to include the organic diversity (some vertebrates, birds
& few insects like Lepidoptera).
