Locate the site of the shipwreck

Examine the routes of the Industry and the Providence. The intersection of the two paths is the location of the shipwreck Industry. Place your cursor at the intersection and record below the latitude and longitude shown at the bottom of the MyWorldGIS window next to Cursor Location.

Location of the Industry in degrees latitude and longitude.

_______N Latitude _________ W Longitude

Measure the distances that each ship traveled.

Industry__________________nautical miles.

Providence_______________nautical miles.

How many nautical miles is it from LaHave to Halifax?

How long should it have taken at 10 knots?

(A knot is 1 nautical mile per hour and 1.151 land miles per hour)

How many total nautical miles did the passengers of the Industry travel by sea and land?

How many days did the passengers and crew of the Industry travel from LaHave to London and then the return to Halifax?

Digitize a symbol for the location of the Shipwreck

In EDIT mode, click on the button that is labeled Create a new empty layer just below the Layer List heading. In the New Layer window, choose point: name the new layer Shipwreck. Continue with the digitizing instructions given earlier. You may want to symbolize Shipwreck as a large star in the Edit Appearance Window.

Create a Layout in MyWorldGIS

Create a presentation map in MyWorldGIS and share your findings in a written narrative or in a PowerPoint or KeyNote presentation. To create a finished map ready for printing, go to File/Layout and select Print.

In the Print Preview page, for the scale, choose nautical miles. Reposition and resize the north arrow and legend so your map is well composed. Turn off any unnecessary layers in the legend. Add a title (called a note in MyWorldGIS) and your name as cartographer. When you are finished, choose Page setup to specify the orientation as landscape or portrait, click OK. Drag corners of map to resize the map. Remember to save your project! Your map should show the North Atlantic, the routes of the two ships and the watery grave of the Industry.

Print your masterpiece or import it into presentations

Choose Print. In the Print dialog box, you are not actually printing the map, instead you are choosing the format that you will print to, jpg is a good choice. You should save your map as your_name.jpg in your Shipwreckdata/Created folder. See Figure 16 below. You may quit MyWorldGIS by going to File/Quit MyWorldGIS. Open your_name.jpg in a photo editing software such as iPhoto, and print from there or import the image into PowerPoint or Keynote software.

Compare your map with the maps of your peers. Post all the student results of shipwreck positions. What is the geographic range of the shipwreck estimates? How much variance in degrees latitude and longitude? What clues had the most influence: Winds, surface currents, ice margins, storms, Sailing to Buy a Wedding Dress descriptions or the historical shipping maps?
