1930s
Below is another photo of Frances Wilson Osborne, my generation's Great Grandmother. As usual she is dressed in black. Whose front porch is this? I assume this was made in either Damascus, Virginia or Bristol, Tennessee. She often wears a wide black ribbon around her waist in photographs.
More soon....

Neighbor to Neighbor, published by Appalachian State University, 2007, Boone, NC., contains the memoirs of my great-great uncle, The Rev. William A. Wilson. Edited by Sandra L. Ballard and Leila E. Weinstein. Our extended family is very fortunate to have this work in print. Highly recommended.
For more general reading of the Civil War in Appalachia, look forThe Heart of Confederate Appalachia, Western North Carolina in the Civil War by John C. Inscoe and Gordon B. McKinney. Published by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 2000, it records a war very much different than of Lee and Grant and their armies.
The Diary of Frances Wilson Osborne, transcribed by Glenn N. Holliman in 2009, is unpublished but available by email. From 1914 to 1940 my great grandmother irregularily recorded her life and times. There is much family history in her diary. If you want a better understanding of our roots, spend some time with these 100 plus pages.
The 1943 Diary of Mayme Osborne Stansbery, transcribed by Glenn N. Holliman in 2010, is unpublished but a compelling story of a Bristol, Tennessee family relocated by World War II to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My grandmother describes life in the turmoil of her personal world turned upside down by family and international events in the early 1940s. Sadly, before the year 1943 was over, Mayme died prematuraly at age 47. She is buried next to her parents at East Hill Cemetery, Bristol, Tennessee
