Something about Eurozone Crisis - (Pardon spelling mistakes if any)

It all started with Maastricht treaty of 1992, which envisaged to create a single currency i.e., euro for the EU. The countries like Greece, Portugal were not as financially sound as Germany and France, but the single currency came with voluminous benefits, like more market for goods, more capacity to borrow funds, and some others which were were hard to resist. Some vital conditions which the said treaty proposed were - inflation to be less than 5%, deficit to be less than or equal to 3%, and debt to GDP ratio to be not more than 60%. But as on January 1999, with the creation of Euro, countries like Greece saw their exports rising and the borrowing cost came down. So the countries like Greece started borrowing more money, the interest rates of banks became almost zero, more liquidity in the market, more demand and hence the growth was good which was basically a demand driven economy. Although all these profligate activities lead to increase of fiscal deficit to over 3%, which was manipulated by Greece to show that it is under 3%. The problem came to the picture when in 2009, the Greece govt told that it would not be able to pay its bond obligations as the housing bubble has bursted and its banks were saddled with NPAs and Credit default swaps have also failed, the debt to GDP ratio is well over 60%, the fiscal deficit is almost in double digits and it is on the Verge of a default. This lead to a series of meeting among the still-not-so-affected countries like France and Germany to chalk out a plan as they knew that more than Greece needs euro, it is now Euro that needs Greece more than before. So the EFSF was created to help Greece with funds and came to impose strict fiscal conditions. Soon Spain also asked for help and the acronym PIGS became popular Even recently Cyprus has asked for help. It seems that contain-the-contagion strategy doesn't seem to work. The biggest problem is that even if Greece wants to devalue its currency to solve the BoP problem, it can't devalue as Maastricht treaty will not allow. So this is Euro debt crises which has caused ripples in the world economy and many gone and coming and gone elections were won on this premises.
