Postgraduate Education

Increasing involvement in national (C.O.A.) and international (A.A.O.S.) organizations at the committee level. Involvement in the design and co-ordination of continuing education for orthopaedic surgeons, and participation in continuing education courses in Canada, the United States and abroad. Heavily involved in training/education of national and international fellows (fully trained surgeons) in the field of advanced hip reconstructive techniques and research methodology. Many of these have returned to academic posts in their country of origin, in addition to the scholarly presentation and publication of the research work I supervised.

Research Interests, leading to presentations and publications
1. Biological events following traumatic dislocation of the hip.

2. Vascular and histologic events following fracture of the hip in man.

3. The nerve supply of bone.

4. Deformity and injuries of the vertebral column in ankylosing spondylitis.

5. The treatment of injuries around the hip (until 1985)

6. Every aspect of reconstructive hip surgery:

  • Excision arthroplasty

  • Osteotomy

  • Arthrodesis

  • Surface replacement

  • Primary replacement

  • Revision replacement

  • Infection prevention and treatment

  • Bearing surfaces

7. Musculoskeletal infection.

8. Musculoskeletal oncology (until 1996).

9. Reconstruction of the knee (until 1997).

  1. Human joint replacement design and clinical trials.

  2. Minimally invasive joint replacement techniques, instrumentation and outcomes measurement.

  3. Metal on metal hip joint reconstruction

  4. Periprosthetic fractures after hip replacement

  5. MRSA/SE prevention and treatment

  6. Antibiotic depots

Research Co-ordination
