What do you think a typical report should consist of?

  • Form groups of 3-4 students.
  • Look at the example report TALSINKIFIX on Blackboard.
  • Analyse the structure of the report:
  • Take an in-depth look at the different parts of the report and write down which information it contains.

The basic components of a research report

  • Title page
  • (Executive) summary or abstract
  • Table of contents page
  • Literature Review
  • Introduction (Procedure/method)
  • Body/Findings
    • Findings
  • Discussion / analysis
  • Conclusions/Recommendations
  • Reference List
  • Appendices

The order of writing a report

  • In which order do you think you write the most important parts of a report?
    • Executive summary
    • Introduction
    • Body
    • Conclusion

Save your sources!

  • Always save the sources you use.
  • This is absolutely critical for doing decent research!
  • When you save information in your ‘notes’, always copy/paste the URL where you found the information or note down which book or magazine you used.

A note on sources

  • Wikipedia is not allowed.
  • Investopedia is not allowed.

Introduction to APA referencing

  • In IFMC, you are expected to use APA referencing.
  • Referencing is a standardized method to save and account for your sources.
  • APA referencing consists of two parts:
    • An in-text reference at the place where you used the information from the source.
    • An entry in your reference list with details about the source, at the end of your report.

Example of an in-text reference, according to APA:
